| 1126488 | 2010-08-11 00:26:00 | Ok, so I am ready to put new OS into old PC and will change it from Win ME to Win XP Professional. Which is the best way to do it? Shall I format the drive and then install or can it go straight in as un upgrade? Appreciate any comments on this. LL |

| 1126489 | 2010-08-11 00:32:00 | Save any data from the ME install, Boot from the XP CD, select the option to install Windows - blow away the partition, then let XP create a new one and it will format the drive / Install a fresh copy of XP. DONT upgrade -- ME can be very unstable at times. Its FAR better to do a fresh install. Edited: just doing one right now on a customers PC, so heres each instruction (Jumping between this pc and other one) They have a buggered XP so ME may be slightly Boot from CD -( drivers load) Press Enter Press F8 at licence agreement Press ESC Select partition with OS - Press D Press Enter Press L Select Format NTFS Press Enter Sit Back and windows will do the rest till information ( COA etc) has to be entered |

| 1126495 | 2010-08-11 06:00:00 | Yep, follow Waiuni's instructions, you should be all good. What processor does the PC have? As long as it's got 512MB RAM it should tick along acceptable - our file server here is still a P3 667MHz with 512MB RAM and it runs OK, trick is keeping the startup tidy - NOD32 and that's it, the older processors don't do multitasking like today's ones do. :thumbs: |

Thanks Wainuitech will follow those steps.Cheers LL Close save whatever, put the cd in, reboot, change the bootdisk in the bios to the xp cd. Save the settings in the BIOS. Then boot from it, (remember to press a key when it says to), format / partition the hdd while youre in the setup screen / then install |
