1127948 2010-08-15 10:54:00 the old desktop is getting a bit old and i'm tired of shoveling coal in the back ao its time for a new one .

So I am after some advice on the best way to get a new machine .

Firstly budget, prob a max of about $1500 .
Use - home office stuff, web surfing, minor photoshop stuff, and the odd game (not online) here and there .

So if I can get the above for my budget am I better to just stroll into one of the chains, e . g . noel leeming, and see whats on special or am i better to go to a specialist store e . g . computer lounge and buy off the shelf or get them to knock something up or finally build myself (novice and no idea of which parts to buy) .

All advice is most welcome cheers

1127951 2010-08-15 11:05:00 Computerlounge I guess. There maybe a few who will do it. Where in Auckland are you, if you're in Auckland? Speedy Gonzales (78)

North Shore but like most people in Auckland travelling around aint a biggie - just got to chose which day and the time when you take the trip.

1127953 2010-08-15 11:21:00 Playtech @ 60 Constellation Drive, Mairangi Bay? http://www.playtech.co.nz/ ? Dont know how good or bad they are. Never brought anything from there or the shore. Since I'm in Mt Eden Speedy Gonzales (78)
1127954 2010-08-15 19:36:00 ComputerLounge first, Playtech second. What games?
That is quite importnat - high end FPS you'd need a high end PC, just the odd RPG not quite so high end, Solitaire - budget will be fine.
You need to tell them that so that parts suit it's use.

1127955 2010-08-15 21:24:00 I would suggest an i3 CPU as a budget processor. Once you have the CPU architecture worked out, you have something to work on for your budget. Its a Nehalem dual core with hyper threading, and clocks like a demon!
GPU wise depends on your LCD, are you keeping the existing? GTX460 or if too steep, 5770? The rest is just fulling in the gaps!

1127956 2010-08-15 23:55:00 Speedy isn't allowed to advertise on this site. Why not ask him or pctek to build one for you? PJ Poppa John (284)
