| 1127356 | 2010-08-13 05:54:00 | A friend gave me a home-burned copy of XPhomeSP3 but I can't read it on my 2002-vintage machine, presumably because it was burned too fast. I made a slower-burn copy of the CD on another machine but ImgBurn says "Warning: requested 4x, got 16x". It seems the Imation blank CDs have a minimum burn speed of 16x. (although it doesn't say that anywhere. It just says "1x-52x") The DVD reader is definitely less than 16x. What does one do in such circumstances? (no jokes about boat anchors please |

| 1127359 | 2010-08-13 07:25:00 | Are you using a DVD burner or a CD burner? This is happening because for whatever media code is in the imation discs, the burner's firmware says 16x. So even though the discs can be burned from 1x-52x, the slowest the burner can do them is 16x. I guess you are using a dvd burner? In general, CD burning on dvds is a bit of an afterthought, and CDs are best burned on an actual CD burner. Burning slower does not always give a better burn quality. In some cases, it can result in WORSE quality. My experience has found that burning about half the maximum speed gives pretty good results on my dvd burner (NEC). |

| 1127361 | 2010-08-13 09:15:00 | Maybe try clicking on the little green running man image in Discovery if visible, then add/update the speed (green cross) for the Disc ID (e.g. 4x), and also select for the device (if it does display lower speeds, e.g. 4x). I retrieved an old IDE CD drive and it read the 16x burn OK I must say that using the integrated-SP3 version of XP is the way to go. I hadn't appreciated how much time and effort it saves:) |
