1127069 2010-08-12 08:50:00 Ok, so I'm installing Linux 5.10 on my second hand PC because my BIOS is to old to recognise a new version. I press enter to do the default installation. It runs through about a page of scripts and it stops when it gets to:

[4294572.223000] Freeing unused kernel memory: 224k freed

Then the CDROM powers down and I left it for a while.
It still has done nothing after about an hour and using the manual install did nothing different other than usual, same problem.

Try a Live CD of Puppy Linux, what happens with it?

1127072 2010-08-12 10:22:00 How do you mean that the BIOS is too old to recognise a new version - there may be other things doing this but not sure how the BIOS could stop an install? johnd (85)
1127073 2010-08-12 10:30:00 I'd strongly suggest something newer than Ubuntu 5.10. It's now 5 years old, and a lot of changes (And bug fixes) have occured in that time.

It's a free download. Do yourself a favor, and try either a newer Ubuntu version, or another linux distro at least :)

1127074 2010-08-12 19:03:00 I would suggest you find the ALTERNATE version of whatever distro you try.
Generally you are given the option to download this on the distro sites.
Have had several faulty installs over the years but the 'alternate' version goes
no problem.Have you tried yr 5.10 as a live CD?

1127075 2010-08-13 09:28:00 Ive tried the newest version of Ubuntu and it didn't recognise it. Ive also tried the live CD but since of got no OS on the hdd it the live cd told me to insert other disk. Ill try another the fedora distro. jd2759 (15763)
1127076 2010-08-13 18:48:00 The alternate version is the same distro but with a script installer instead of the video one. When you download the .iso you find the alternate to download and burn.
It will not help if you just keep getting video installers and as far as I know there is nothing on the CD to say it is the alternate it allows you to participate in the install and maybe fix problems.

1127077 2010-08-13 19:15:00 Further to my above>Puppy linux also uses a script installer and I recently tried to install it to a laptop that went blank similar to yr problem.I used the script installer to try different resolutions and found the correct one and all was sweet. kjaada (253)
1127078 2010-08-14 02:19:00 Not quite relevant, if it won't even boot, to get to the installer part though ;)

Post your motherboard make / model please?
