844301 2009-12-30 02:00:00 Anyone here able to give advice on where to get good buffet meals from, Lunch and dinner mainly but would consider breakfast.

We googled but some of the places have changed from a buffet to a menu.

Places we have been to in the past.........Seq88 at Redwood, The Gardens in Shirley, The Casino, Hornby Junction though we wouldn't go back there again if you paid us to and the Oxford in Colombo Street by the river and the Pargoda in Cashel Street

We heard that the Park Royal, not sure if it is still called that does a buffet, not much to pick from but top notch food all the same....any one able to comment on that.?

So, who else does buffet food in Chch, can be Chinese/Asian style, european, what ever. Comments welcome especially if you have been there yourself.

844302 2009-12-30 02:42:00 This ( . dineout . co . nz/allresults . php?cuisine=29&submit=Go" target="_blank">www . dineout . co . nz) appears to have a list of all the buffet restaurants in ChCh .

Have been to Oxford on Avon recently for lunch and dinner which was OK .

Haven't been to Sequoia 88 at Redwood for a couple of years as I've always thought it a bit of a barn but the fossils enjoyed it earlier this year .

Also haven't been to the Casino for a while but the few times I have were enjoyable .

Riccarton Buffet Restaurant and Bar is a place that I haven't been to .

I got food poisoning at The Gardens in Shirley a few years ago so wouldn't go back there .

Looks like it might be time for me to try out a few places again sometime . :)

844303 2009-12-30 03:49:00 Thanks for that link Foxy, will explore further.

The Garden place, earlier in the year there food selection and taste went down but they seem to have come back up again, change of chef maybe but they don't have a wide selection. Seq88, that wasn't so good for a wee while but we have been there with the children 2 times in the last 6 months or so and they provided a reasonable feed. Casino can come and go, some times there is a nice selection, other times it seems limited, only problem we had with the casino was when we found blood in the chicken drumsticks to be told that it was *normal* for blood to be in cooked drumsticks, that later resulted in the offer of a refund or free sitting at a later date when we took it further up the managerment chain.

Anyway, thanks for the link, exploring our options as to other eatting places.

844304 2009-12-30 03:57:00 Not to be a nuisance. I've had chicken with some blood in them, it might still be cooked all the way via. It may taste nicer that way :D Nomad (952)
844305 2009-12-30 04:07:00 Yes, someone has told me that The Gardens has changed management and chef since I was there but as I have never been so sick in my life I now have a phobia about the place. :p

It's a pity that the Cabbage Tree on Moorhouse Ave was knocked down to make way for McDonalds as they were the best buffet restaurant in ChCh I reckon.

They all seem to vary from time to time, probably due to new chefs and staff.

844306 2009-12-30 04:20:00 I have been to Seqioa 88 once or twice. It was excellent value for money and the food was quite reasonable. xyz823 (13649)

844308 2009-12-30 08:24:00 Cabbage Tree went to crap as time came for it to close down don't know which precipitated which, Sequoia 88 - average but plenty of everything at average price, therefore quite good, chocolate blancmange very good, ditto Hoon Hay 88 although I think now gone but I could be wrong, went to The Gardens about three weeks ago, cheap, I got in as senior citizen (over 60 years, v. cool), plenty of food but rather bland tasting, nice friendly staff, will be going back. zqwerty (97)
