845388 2010-01-04 07:25:00 People buy cars from dealers because they perceive it to be safer, and usually finance is easier.
The dealer is making close to 100% margin on a fresh Jap import, with 5 yo models landing for round $7K - that is why when someone misguidely trys to trade one in after a year or so they are floored by an offer of less than 50% on what they paid.
The one type of dealer operation I would recommend, is buying a 3yo car from a lease company, or rental car company, disposal site. These cars are generally new New Zealand, they have been properly maintained, (Rental cars are subject to Certificates of Fitness- which is a far higher and tougher standard than the normal WoF).
For vehicles to look at - you can't go wrong with a well maintained Corolla, although they tend to be dearer.
I would not turn my nose up a a Mitsi Lancer - they perform well, handle well, and are well made - usually cheaper than an equivalent Corolla. Also Mazda 323, 3 and Honda Civics are worth considering.
One small point - the timing belt on most jap cars should be replaced every 100,000 km, or 6 years which ever comes sooner - when buying get it checked out that this service has been done (if over 100,000km ) a timing belt failure is very expensive and can mean a new top end of the engine.

845389 2010-01-06 03:38:00 Yep, Mazda Familia (1.5l, manual is much better, must be 1994 or later though), or a Corolla 1.6 (manual better again), any year really but the 8th gen when the shape changed in 1995 is a good place to start looking, the earlier 90s ones don't look all that sharp.

Turners has bugger all cars suiting your requirements in wellington at the moment though, there is one 2002 familia which is perfect (1.5, sedan, auto) but only 45000km on the clock it will go for well over 6 k.

You are really pushing it to find a post 2000 car in reasonable condition for 6k, even trademe might be pushing it.

Searching trademe within those criteria the ONLY mazda or toyota I could find is this, which looks prefect for you... :D The interplay models are the nice ones, full electrics etc.

My parents bought a Sentra from Kim a few years back, no problems.

But that Familia yeah ... an option. We were thinking more in the line of a more compact size. Like a Mazda 2, not sure on price that might be a more recent model and hence $$$. Mitsu Mirage isn't it. Honda something. It's those designs with the small engine compartment and hatchback almost like a cube design car.
