847410 2010-01-10 01:33:00 We went and saw the earthrace boat when it came to wanganui, i took photos of it, and a friend has a the earthrace book, its really interesting to read . . . . . . . . . . . . .

It seems astonishing that it has sunk .

now im not asking who was right / wrong, but even if the jap and Ady gil did both do wrongs, it seems a little off that the jap boat did not go to its rescue .

and thats some expensive boat to sink . . . . . . . .

i wish that they would stop whaling, but that doesnt want me to go out and sit on a tiny boat and wave and yell, and get hosed :p

its not until something is gone that we realise what we had, and by then its too late, when all the whalles are gone, what will the japs then catch?

just a comment,

i thought the earthrace boat was kinda neat .

847411 2010-01-10 01:37:00 I am really annoyed about it being sunk unnecessarily and I wish the japs would just fess up and say hey were taking these mammals for food instead of trying to con us all into thinking they do it for research . If the Americans had sunk the boat the world would be in uproar gary67 (56)

If they came clean and said they were taking it for food, they'd be blatantly breaking international treaties. Doing it under the guise of "research" means they are "technically" complying with the law.

As far as I'm concerned, if you're the skipper of a boat which is significantly smaller, more manoeuvrable, and more fragile than a large steel hulled boat that you know isn't happy with your presence, then you'd be stupid not to get out of the damn way. Sure - by all means protest about the whaling if you don't like it, but don't put your life, and your crew's lives at risk. Judging by this video (www.youtube.com) it seemss like the Ady Gill accelerated into the path of the Japanese boat - keep an eye on the amount of white, aerated water behind the Ady Gil which is more or less stationary as the Japanese boat approaches, then seems to accelerate in the few seconds before the collision.

847414 2010-01-10 02:14:00 I don't get why common sense doesn't prevail....it's obvious the Japanese are killing the whales for human consumption, why won't the international treaty committee doing anything about it? Are they being bribed? It really annoys me that they STILL disguise food hunting with 'research'. Bloody disgusting, even more so with the international treaty committee just siting on the blubber asses.

As for Ady Gil it is rather sad to see a magnificent boat destroyed like that. The Japanese whalers have to be arrested and pay for their actions. They did endanger the activists' lives. They did injure an Ady Gil crewman. Before anyone say otherwise, why would Ady Gil's captain would want to get in the way of a huge ship? He would have known Ady Gil would have had no chance in being rammed by the Japanese whaling boat, so I seriously doubt he would have suddenly and intentionally steered Ady Gil into the oncoming boat's path.

That assumes the skipper is a normal, sensible, sane and mentally stable person - and that the video I quoted is a computer-generated forgery.

847416 2010-01-10 03:24:00 man with biggest boat wins,LOL So true

Beets.. can you upload the photos?

ps - the latest I read is that the market in Japan is majorly reduced... the consummers don't actually like the taste of the meat.

847417 2010-01-10 03:25:00 That north shore twit foreign affairs minister should do stuff like getting our navy down there to sink that jap patrol boat.
Looks like they never learned from Pearl Harbour and need another lesson in manners.

If you know anything about boats then you would know that you need to have some speed to able to turn.
If the boat was accelerating it was most likely also trying to turn away at the same time but the jap boat was too close.
