845726 2010-01-06 07:29:00 I can't believe Australia got away with Apartheid yet South Africa got alienated for it and you want us to join Australia, suppose we could then send some members from here out to shoot Maori!

Not sure you would call the treatment of aborigines as apartheid they didnt have to carry passes and had freedom of movement.
The laws to stop them buying piss in the old days was with the best intentions because as a race they fancy a pint or two.

845727 2010-01-06 08:05:00 Or how about we become a dependency of Australia? There are generations of Kiwis who have been depending on the Australian welfare state for yonks, so why not the whole country? We give them water, they lift NZ out of poverty.

What the hell are you talking about NZ is not in poverty ROTFL

We are one of the richest countries in the world, we rate anywhere between 23-28th just based on GDP per Capita. NZ living standards has been steady improving for decades, it just some other countries have been improving faster, ie Australia.

Ive never relied on Australian Welfare, certainly helped there economy a number of times with visits.

I'm glad you found it funny - the post was partially tongue in cheek.

However, I don't agree 100% with your analysis because there is a kernal of truth to what I said. If you select a longer time period you may come to a different conclusion about our progress - there were times where we had a relatively higher standard of living. How much of the current 'standard of living' is debt funded? Our ballooning debts have to be repaid sometime.

I'm not sure where you got 23-28th from but the World Bank has us in 34th position, just above the Czech Republic, Oman & Malta. Big deal.

NZ can't rely on primary products to sell it's way out of troubles and we can't rely on tourism in the long term.....so it has to be something else. If we didn't export our brains and/or raw materials (at wholesale prices) and subsidise overseas interests with our natural resources (think MEUG), then maybe we would have a higher per capita GDP. And if we were a little more protectionist in some of our policies, then we might still have a manufacturing sector to speak of, which could add value to all of the raw materials we export. Instead we export our raw materials, and import processed goods. How long will this last?

Believe it or not this country is on a long slow slippery slope unless we do something about it. We aren't as good/great as we think we are.

845729 2010-01-06 14:25:00 If your only reason for going for a republic is the Treaty of Waitangi then think again . As a republic we get to keep it .

SAID WHO . AS A REPUBLIC ITS THE CROWNS PROBLEM, IF THE REPUBLICAN GOVT SAYS SO .

The "waitangi industry" is one reason the republic is taking so long, and is not feasible untill the "waitangi industry" is put to bed .

Once all the "waitangi industry" matters are resolved, there is of course no reason why a republican govt would have to pay them if it didnt want to .

+++

"Leave our constitution alone and get on with the important things this country really needs . "

WHAT CONSTITUTION WOULD THAT BE??????

As a "Republic" we might at last get a constitution which would resolve a lot of issues .

+++

New Zealand becoming a state of Australia would be one of the best economic advantages it could ever acheive .

In due course there will be an "Economic Union" in the sw pacific encompasing: Australia, New Zealand, some of the island states that dont go under the rising sea, and some of the southern Asian nations .

Borderles EU'S are the way of the future . "Dum Kiwi" can only make like an ostrich for so long .

The court of appeal gave us the "Waitangi Tribunal" to resolve important issues for the "Tribes" during the creation of the "soe's"

To buy votes Helen Joe Mao Clark Turned it into the "waitangi industry" .

The "waitangi industry" has been holding this country back for the last 25 years and will continue to do untill it is stopped .

A Republic is one of the biggest fears of the "waitangi industry" because a strong Republic it what will rise from the ashes of the "waitangi industry" .

845730 2010-01-06 18:28:00 Correct on all points - except one.

Not too sure about EU - The Sth Pacific Edition.
How many contributing members would there be?
Doesn't NZ (and probably Australia) already give (on behalf of those wonderful suckers.... uh... taxpayers) millions in "aid" to some Sth Pacific islands?

If they already take millions in aid, I can't see how they'd be making a fair contribution to any kind of economic union.

845731 2010-01-06 19:19:00 The problem with NZ becoming a state of Australia is that although there's plenty in it for NZ, there's not much benefit to Australia. There is no way we could export sufficient water to Aussie to make a difference to their water shortage.

Can you imagine Austrailians would be willing to subsidise our dole (irrespective of the Kiwis currently getting the Aussie dole) or prison population?

845732 2010-01-06 20:59:00 I note that Australia is considering the same sort of referendum.

I prefer to live in NZ.

If NZ became a state of Australia we may be subject to Federal law as well as NZ law.

Federal Law and state law. In most of cases Federal law overrides state laws and if the means getting rid of the Treaty Of Waitangi then lets join Oz..

I work for a company that is based in Oz. We are always treated like a poor cousin due to our 20% exchange rate differences..

845735 2010-01-06 22:15:00 Getting back to Republic or not as the case may be I think that as the Maorii have a King and/or Queen they would presumably go along with the right to succession. Sweep (90)
