847744 2010-01-11 03:03:00 Shell did a promotion once, a big special for 2hr only, so people rushed to the stations only to find queues .. then by the time they filled up and paid it was back to the usual price :D

They haven't done another promotion since.

847746 2010-01-11 03:05:00 When I use a credit card in the Philippines, I can be charged upto a extra 7% for transaction fee's..........

.

I don't use CC when I go overseas. Some country do charge no fees to exchange traveler cheques provided they are already in the right currency. I tend to carry foreign cash purchased in NZ, not much, I am backpacker and I put it in a traveler wallet around my clothes under my trousers :p

Only have a 2 or 3 days worth in my pocket at a time. I also don't carry a wallet incase that gets stolen, had it since 1997 so its sentimental.

Passport and CC in the traveler wallet. Some notes and coins in my pocket

Via USA shops and the like. I find the FX rate is not that bad via the internet with a NZ CC. It is the commission they charge, CC I think mine has a 5% rate. So that adds up. Never take cash from machine thou, cos CC gets no interest free period for cash advance and that interest is calculated at 25% approx on mine and the ATM has a $25 fee per transaction.

847747 2010-01-11 03:07:00 Far queue?

If you got the car on the pedestrian pathment you were doing well
By the time you queued and filled up and got to the counter, the specials had finished
Not bad getting customers to your door eh .. There were a couple who didn't fill and went home and glanced at the price on the machine. Many just put up with it since they made it all that way to the gas station and just paid normal prices.

Slightly different but I filled up the car one evening, the price on the browser and the price on the roadside display were different. While I was waiting inside to pay, another employee started to change the display price.

Questioned the difference in price to be told that the price had just gone up and if I wasn't happy I could remove the petrol from the tank.

Well, how logical is that........

Was reported later that the service station got fined over that, maybe one of the customers ahead of me made a official complaint.

The same thing with banks. You see the FX signs outside and by the time you go inside and ask the rate is diff.

You ask for a reason and they say cash. So then I say, oh, I have cash, then they say something else ....

I also find some banks now don't have a outside sign.

Re: petrol, we haven't really took notice of the big signs. We have the supermarket coupons so we stick to Shell who have Flybuys and we try to put it on a CC. Well, they don't use a Flybuys CC so I guess if we go EFTPOS we don't really lose much....

847750 2010-01-11 04:02:00 Some retailers, particularly online ones, had a small print that said a "discount" applied to Cash, Direct Credit and Eftpos transactions which got around the Credit Card fee. Most big places didn't.
So now they do.
So what. Who uses a credit card for stuff like that anyway? Use your eftpos card.

I was being charged 5% when I had the shop.

Quite a few people I know use credit card for everything, and pay it in full each month. It gets you reward points and gives you 55 days of "free money". So I use credit card for 90% of my purchases.

Exactly. It doesn't cost me anything (other than an annual fee I have to pay no matter how often I use the card), plus I get reward points - up to 1% cashback from National Bank - so why not? Generally I will pay by credit card anywhere that will let me, even for small $10 transactions. With a pin number on the card, it takes the same amount of time and effort as EFTPOS.

The only exception to the rule is if I'm buying something from a small local shop, I will use cash or EFTPOS as I know they can't absorb the cost of the credit card transaction fees like the bigger retailers can.

I have a second card I use exclusively for purchasing more expensive items which have a warranty - such as computer gear - as the bank has a scheme where they will double the length of the warranty for free (well - there's a $5 transaction fee on each purchase, but there's no annual fee so it sort of balances itself out).

847753 2010-01-11 19:07:00 Interesting to see what happens at the pumps with EFPOS terminals as to whether they charge when you use a CC as opposed to EFTPOS card.. i.e Pak N Save or Gull. paulw (1826)
