I suppose people who don't care about whales probably don't care about any animals in general. If these guys are given a heroes welcome back home backed by the government it would send a message to the blardy nips stop killing whales. |

Relationship with the Japanese means the politicians' backbones are absent. But yeah, agree with you. It's very rude of the Japanese to be hunting great whales right outside our home. |

| 847438 | 2010-01-10 11:44:00 | Far from humane actually....it's quite difficult to humanely kill huge marine animals like whales. The exploding harpoons won't really kill in one hit. Sometimes a whale can escape, after sustaining mortal damage, only to die a slow and painful death, maybe even killed by sharks. Aside from that, whales are entirely different from say, cows and lambs. The latter have been bred for millenniums for their meat, hides, etc. And while they may congregate for safety and warmth, apart from maternal duties they're not too social of animals. On the other hand, whales are extremely social; their groups are devoted to each other, a young calve cannot survive without its mother and they depend on each other to locate/round up food. So much of their lives include their family, so killing a whale is much like killing a member of a human family. Oh, and if I remember correctly a couple of species of whales on their menu are endangered. Or have little data to base their numbers on. Will have to check up on those. And no, it's not anthropomorphism. The word itself I find offensive when applied to intelligent animals such as whales, wolves, dogs, cats and many other animals who posses as much, or even more, intelligence and awareness than us humans. |
