845716 2010-01-05 23:55:00 Why not go the whole hog and join Australia .

I am not sure of the figures, but 100,000's of NZ'ers are already in Australia now permanently and each year more and more follow .

I believe there is scope in the Australian laws for NZ's incorporation as simply a state . Australian states already have local governments . Our laws are slowing and steady aligning . Why not start the process of incorporation . Each State in Australia already has it's own unique identity, this means New Zealand could also continue to have it's own (e . g . State tourism boards) .

I know Kiwi Pride might get in the way of this and suggest obstacles in the way, and in addition it will be political suicide for any party that advocates it . However, the "spin" merchants are good and I am sure there are more positives than negatives . Let's start with an economic union within 5 years like the EU and then after 10 years consider incorporation with Australia in say 2025 . It will take a lot of work . For Kiwi Pride, we could still have a our sporting teams like Scotland, Wales and England have .

All we really have to "surrender" is our economic policy (and eventually our Foreign policy, like the EU is beginning to), but I am sure that each state has some control over it's own local budgets for Sports, Tourism, Health, Education, and Welfare .

Don't get me wrong, I am proud of New Zealand and what it achieves, but that does not mean we still can't be proud and practical as well .

Have some family who went to Australia by themselves . Over Christmas we went to Auckland, and they all liked Auckland, yeah the Auckland bashing . . . . Auckland is maybe the only city where you can appreciate a larger international city, yes it is spread out, maybe much similar to other cities, it can be expensive, can have better transportation like a subway system, not sure on traffic didn't experience that and we were at the holiday periods . A more dynamic demographics, more places and variety of eating out .

It has a reason that Auckland has the most population in NZ and likewise other major cities in the world .

Australia is the 51st unofficial butt licking state of the United States of America, the US says jump and Aussies ask how high SIR .

Its also worth pointing out, Australia IS largely running out of water which is a monumental problem . Sure the living standard is ahead today, I am far from sure about 20 years from now

Living standards have improved in NZ in the last 20 years, sure Aussie has done it faster, its also worth noting this is a marathon not a sprint .

Poms come here in there droves, Kiwi choose the easy option and move to Aussie for a change, some Aussies come here . NZ's pop is still growing contrary to sensational news reports .

If Australia wishes to become the West Island of NZ and grow a soul again then maybe we could look at that .

845720 2010-01-06 04:42:00 Or how about we become a dependency of Australia? There are generations of Kiwis who have been depending on the Australian welfare state for yonks, so why not the whole country? We give them water, they lift NZ out of poverty. andrew93 (249)

Good idea, but the abbos would start claiming NZ.

845722 2010-01-06 05:17:00 I can't believe Australia got away with Apartheid yet South Africa got alienated for it and you want us to join Australia, suppose we could then send some members from here out to shoot Maori! gary67 (56)
845723 2010-01-06 06:23:00 Can we afford it? Everything will need to change beginning with our currency.

Why would this be a big cost??. It's been done at least 3 times since 1967..

If you think that ten you must live in some socialist workers paradise. Our living standards are dropping daily or have you won Lotto recently..

845725 2010-01-06 06:33:00 I note that Australia is considering the same sort of referendum.

I prefer to live in NZ.

If NZ became a state of Australia we may be subject to Federal law as well as NZ law.
