If the boat was accelerating it was most likely also trying to turn away at the same time but the jap boat was too close.

Well pointed out, no boat speed no turning ability basic boating knowledge

Ah that's right.....if anything now it seems like the Japanese had some sort of intention to either scare Ady Gil's crews, or scrape or as it turns out, hit them. Especially with the crew video taping the whole thing.

They probably wanted to youtube the crash anyway with the title "Big ass Shonan Maru ramming activists loz". In Japanese, of course.

847424 2010-01-10 04:31:00 My guess it that the SM2 wanted to intimidate the crew of the Ady Gil by getting up close. If the the Sea Shepard crew had not gunned their engines, they would have been fine.

Then again, if the crew of the SM2 went up to help the Ady Gil, there is a good chance that the SS crew would have made it seem like they were captured.

Pointing out the obvious is all well and good, but at the point the boat accelerated, any forward movement would have been a bad idea given that the Japanese vessel was just about to pass in front of it.

847426 2010-01-10 05:11:00 The SM2 is a real, big-ass, steel ship. The Ady Gil is balsa wood in comparison.

By all means, they should protest, but to get that close to the front of the ship (which can't just stop or turn at the drop of a hat - like a train) is suicide.

They are responsible for their own actions.

847427 2010-01-10 05:25:00 Regardless of the emotions of the day and the rights and wrongs of killing whales, the protesters were in the wrong.

Just wait until the "truth" comes out.

I have no sympathy for the Ady Gil, the Sea Shepard and/or its crew. They got what was coming to them.

847428 2010-01-10 05:30:00 can you explain what you mean by the truth Zippity?

the truth from who's point of view?

and no im not getting at any one or their opnions, i am just disapointed what has happened, and why still those people get to keep whaling...... do they really need to? and if its research why the heck do they need to kill so many animals ...........

847429 2010-01-10 05:37:00 I have to agree with one of the earlier observations - there was a lot of foam coming out the back of the AG, so it was under significant power at the time it was hit.
It appears to have been accellerating forward, when the sensible thing would have been to drop it into reverse. If it was in reverse, and still leaving all that foam in its wake, then it must have already had plenty of forward momentum.

As I see it, the only reasonable conclusion is that the protestors sacrificed their boat, and are bullsh..ing the media about the true circumstances.

If the boat was insured they'll have to answer some very tough questions before any money gets paid out.
