1128277 2010-08-16 04:44:00 Hi all, i am wanting to connect my computer to my broadband router, i have a laptop in my room as well that connects via the wireless ( i have 2-3 bars, in the farthest point in my room), so reception is really good, and my room is outside so i can't run a network cable out there, so i am wondering about wireless,

I know there are USB devices out there that can do it, but what about speeds compared to ethernet??

or is there a wireless aerial/ antenna that i can plug into my ethernet port on my comp to connect to the wireless router/modem??

Thanks

1128278 2010-08-16 05:53:00 Wireless isnt as good as ethernet for speeds

And no there's nothing you can plug into an ethernet port to make it wireless. Buy a PCI card, or USB adapter. What version of windows is connected to the modem/router?

1128279 2010-08-16 06:39:00 Nothing is connected via cable to the Modem/router,
The modem is in the house, and i have the computer in my bedroom.

I want to be able to use the net on my comp, from that Modem.

So if i got a wireless card, and then connect an aerial to that
some thing like this.

would that work??

1128280 2010-08-16 07:03:00 Personally I would try/use a wireless USB device on a 3m USB cable - dangle it by a bit of string so that it's high up in a window BBCmicro (15761)
1128281 2010-08-16 07:13:00 what about Internet speed, would that being USB affect much??

I don't know much info about the USB devices sorry.

1128282 2010-08-16 07:35:00 don't know much info about the USB devices sorry .

Neither do I .

But I think a USB device would have the same network performance as a card, apart from the antenna aspect .

The USB device has a small antenna which is not ideal . The key is to put the USB device in a good place - generally high up - which is why a USB cable might be good .

A desktop card might be low down and might need an antenna on a lead to be any good, again so that it can be placed in a good position

If you go the USB way, I don't think Wireless-N (the more expensive sort) will be worth it because Wireless-N is mainly useful for devices which have multiple antennas - and I don't think a small USB stick can have multiple antennas inside it . Plus the access point (the wireless router) would need to be wireless-N too to get the benefit

1128284 2010-08-16 07:51:00 Is the modem/router wireless N?? If it isn't it'll only go at G speeds Speedy Gonzales (78)
1128285 2010-08-16 07:53:00 no it is not wireless N, so i know it won't go N speeds, but i'm not worried about that. stevensaaron (6348)
1128286 2010-08-16 07:58:00 Thats alright then Speedy Gonzales (78)
