1128088 2010-08-16 01:16:00 Hi,

I got new PC for a while. It does not have "Telephone" kind of connection for Dialup.
Is there any way to connect my PC to Dialup. I got broadband but just want to have Dialup as a backup in case my broadband goes down.

Thanks.

1128089 2010-08-16 01:32:00 What you mean is the PC doesn't have an internal modem. Because they are becoming rather an obsolete thing these days.

You will either have to buy an internal (PCI) modem or an external one - and make sure its a standard modem NOT ADSL modem.

If you are using Win7 64bit then its harder as it's very picky about the type you use - most don't work properly.

1128092 2010-08-16 02:21:00 One modem that does work with 64 bit is the Intel 536EP. Well I managed to find the drivers for it, and it tested OK. I haven't tested it, to see if it dials out yet tho Speedy Gonzales (78)
1128093 2010-08-16 04:29:00 There are a few people on TradeMe selling USB (external) dialup modems for about $20. THe beauty of this is that you can use it on any machine or laptop, whereas the internal one stays in that one machine only.
Have a few of them here, and can vouch for them.
Dunno about 64 bit compatibility however.

That matters. Believe me, it matters. Go with Speedys recommendation.

1128095 2010-08-16 10:12:00 Of course, you'll have to check with your ISP that they will actually provide you with a dial-up backup... don't just assume. MushHead (10626)

1128097 2010-08-17 01:34:00 being possibly the most difficult os to get dialup modems working on, and being a new pc, thats roughly 50% likely that he is using 7x64, therefore, if he comes back online, and it turns out he does have 7x64, then the above posts will be there for him. :) jareemon (5207)
