Should New Zealand become a Republic?

Which way would you vote?

This has now been drawn out of the hat as it were.

The Bill proposes a referendum with three options:-
The status quo - a monarchy with an absentee British Head of state selected by birth and a Governor-General appointed by the Prime Minister;
Parliamentary election - a republic with a head of state nominated by the people of New Zealand and elected by a three-quarters (75%) majority of parliament; (the German model (www.republic.org.nz)) or
Direct election - a republic with a head of state nominated by the people of New Zealand and elected by popular vote, using STV (the Irish model (www.republic.org.nz)).

Locke should be shot for treason
Cant have us majority White Europeans of British ancestry keeping our heritage culture and traditions hell no we must change.
Next thing cricket and cucumber sandwiches will be banned.
Yeah Sweep the German model they know all about democracy we have to keep fighting them all the time.
Irish bomb tossing model?
Arent the options supposed to be neutral? words like absentee, selected by birth are slanting the preferences to dumb people.

845699 2010-01-05 00:15:00 I am reminded that Locke, when elected, did not want to swear an oath that is usual for MPs.

However I'm not bothered about Locke particularly.

845700 2010-01-05 00:17:00 Can we afford it? Everything will need to change beginning with our currency.

The cause for a republic is for people with little else to occupy their time. Give them something constructive to keep them busy and they won't have time for something that is a complete waste of time, money and resources.:horrified

What's wrong with the status quo? No-one is being disadvantaged, the monarchy is causing no problems. Why try to fix something that's not broken?:illogical

How about fixing things that really matter? The money would be much better spent on our ailing health system - don't you care about the sick? Our schools never have enough funding - don't you care about your kids' education? The police are always under-resourced - are you not interested in a crime-free country?

Leave our constitution alone and get on with the important things this country really needs.

. . . . . something that is a complete waste of time, money and resources . :horrified

Actually, it'll save us a damn fortune .

Look at it this way:

- Nasty old white mofos "steal Maori land" (on behalf of the Crown)
- On behalf of said Crown, generations of Kiwis pay "compensation" to protesters born generations after the fact .

Remove the link to the Crown, and their beef is now directly with the Crown .
Let them try to convince Her Majesty that she is personally responsible for the alleged misdeeds of British citizens who died 100 years before she was even born .

Result: More Kiwi tax dollars going where they should be: to schools and hospitals instead of "compensating" whiners who have suffered not one bit .

Republic sounds pretty attractive now . . . .

845703 2010-01-05 00:32:00 Just had another thought.

Another green MP got a bill passed which was rather unpopular.

Sue Bradford.
