1129810 2010-08-20 01:55:00 Hi all,

I have a few questions I need some help with:

1/ I have winfast PVR (analog TV tuner) software that has developed a problem where the sound channel won't record, even tho it is fine during normal viewing. I've contacted the manufacturer and as it is no longer supported all they can offer is to install new drivers. Ok, is this something that a relative pc newbie like myself can handle, or is this best left to the pros? Also, as we've been experiencing other problems is it wise to leave this until the other problems are sorted or is it worth fixing this now in case it is the cause of the other problems (see below)?

2/ Our computer is showing BSOD errors with increasing frequency - they seem to be happening almost daily. I've tried checking the error logs and funny thing is sometimes the logged events don't show some of the BSOD events at all, so this makes finding the fault hard! (Will list the error logs when I'm back at home) My question is how frequent is too frequent for BSOD before outside help is needed?

3/ Out of desperation I've thought of running CCleaner, is this likely to only cause more troubles or could it help eliminate the underlying cause?

Please bare with me, as I'm at work now while the PC is at home, so won't have access to error logs etc until after hours.

Machine is:
Windows XP home, service pack 3
AMD Athlon XP 2700+
2.17GHz, 2.00GB of Ram

here is a thread I started here about previous error that *may* be related

pressf1.pcworld.co.nz

since that thread the PC has been to a PC technician to repair an overheating problem, and seemed to be running ok with application hangs pretty much eliminated.

really appreciate any help :)

1129811 2010-08-20 02:01:00 Ccleaner wont fix BSDO's. WHAT does the BSOD/s say? What Winfast PVR tuner do you have?

I know with some of these Leadtek / Winfast tuners (if its PCI), the eeproms on them are faulty. And can get corrupt. And sometimes, windows wont see it (and it wont work at all). If its crashing, I could check them with teamviewer later. And see what the dmp files say

Will post the dmp files once I'm home - do you mean what it says on the BSOD screen or the logged report?

I noticed the last time BSOD happened there was no mention of it in the error logs hrmmm . . . .

Thanks speedy

1129813 2010-08-20 02:19:00 If it blue screens, whats the stop error?? And if it shows the name of a file/driver, whats the name of it? You need a program so you can see what the dmp files say. Dont post them here. It'll be unreadable.

Get this www.nirsoft.net

Install then run it then point it to the folder the dmp files are in. See what files appear in pink...

1129816 2010-08-20 02:39:00 just out of curiosity - could we do the computer more damage by delaying fixing this BSOD error? sooby (15023)
1129817 2010-08-20 02:43:00 With the sound recording issue, have you tried all the sound options in the PVR settings
menu? I had a similar problem as you describe and changed the recording device to Aux
which resolved it for me.

1129818 2010-08-20 02:44:00 No it'll just crash more often. Altho it depends what the cause is. If its malware (like a trojan), then it may damage / cause corrupt files Speedy Gonzales (78)

had tried that before when I had same problem & it worked, however not working this time :(

Are you able to post a screenshot of your settings so I can confirm I have them right please?

ah, right . Kaspersky antivirus scans daily, but I will try an online scan too in case it missed something .

cheers guys
