848794 2010-01-14 22:42:00 Spam warning ;)

A mate of mine (Phil (www.stormav.com)) sold his store in Mt Eden to Eastern HiFi a few years ago.

He recently opened a store (http://www.stormav.com/) in Parnell (12 - 18 months ago?), selling top-end AV gear (because that's what he knows inside-out).

He gave me a tour of the shop a couple of months ago and I sat in some of the demo rooms to have a play with the expensive toys and listen to/see the differences in equipment. Heaven!

He even had a valve amplifier (they ARE still being made) for around $2-3K which provided absolutely AMAZING sound...

im told that the valve Amps are still in demand today by high end users as they provide a much better quality result that modern mosfet Amps cant even get close too?

That was certainly my impression listening to a range of music played through it. At that price, it's also a viable alternative to the really high price 'normal' amps too....

848797 2010-01-15 02:02:00 I was sorry to hear the news - Eastern HiFi served me well when I was in Auckland. Hope the staff get good jobs. Greg (193)

Did he point out that its a the defect in the valve technology that introduces a background noise that some people find pleasing?

848799 2010-01-15 02:38:00 I have belonged to a Hi Fi club for at least 20 years and have heard many differant amps both valve and transistor and find that after a time valves become dull, boring and flat sounding, and it is always good to go back to a transistor powered amp. A drawback with valve amps is that the valves slowly burn out and need replacing, a bit like a light bulb.

As a fellow nerd, I would have thought that 'tweaking' was part of your nature....??? :)

848801 2010-01-15 06:20:00 Id take a valve amp over anything, that is coming from a guitarist point of view so I really only know guitar amps but they scream hueybot3000 (3646)
