| 848596 | 2010-01-15 05:41:00 | Geez. How utterly horrifying. Our latest cost um, $60? That was a shelf and a bathmat to cover the hole where the loo used to be until we do something with that one day. I sold the loo for $123. We ripped out the poncy rubbish sinkl and stupid mixer and replaced it with a free proper old style Royal Doulton one complete with old style Methven taps. Husband installed the stupid poncy one in a house down the road. Oh and I bought a new curtain for the window too, whatever that cost at the Warehouse. So we kind of made a profit on that. Our first bathroom, 2nd hand sink cupboard, used existing sink and taps. Cost of 2 walls of Seratone and some of that strip stuff to run along the bath, some oil based paint and some lino. Can't remember how much it was but if it had been expensive husband never would have done it. I know plumbing parts are disgustingly expensive. I replaced the kitchen tap mixer recently, husband refused to consider it until I found this suitable thing on TM, and he went on about how it had to have these certain connectors so it took a long time to find one. He broke the copper pipe bit behind it too and ranted about how this is why you should leave things alone, but he fixed it with some thing he found out of the scrap bin on the ute so no big deal. The worst thing we had to get was a new hot water cylinder. That was depressing. Unbelievable what people have to pay for this stuff.......... |

Sure second hand is fine sometimes but your missing the point. She wants a nice bathroom, thats her choice. I don't think you talking about how you have a free solution for everything really helps, especially seeing as she doesnt have a man to help out. I'm only young but I helped dad with his bathroom and honestly its not that hard to figure out, the most frustrating part was gettin the walls flat before gibbing. If you decide to use tradesman do as others have said and do as much prep work as possible then clear out. I think you'll do fine if you have a crack at it, you can save money though by waiting on specials at stores, even maybe look and ask about package deals? Where abouts in NZ are you btw? Goodluck! |

| 848598 | 2010-01-15 09:35:00 | The worst thing we had to get was a new hot water cylinder. That was depressing. One of the best purchases I have ever made, Replaced the hot water system with an Infinity continues hot water supply, Full pressure hot water for as long as required, and no waste of power by continual heating of a big container of water. Took 3 years to pay it off, I'd be happy to pay for it for 10 years..... And $123 for a scabby used toilet?, Our brand new one cost $147. |

If you turned a tap on in the kitchen when she was having a shower she would get out of the shower and tell us off. So what did we do especially when when we drinking piss she fell for it everytime. |

| 848602 | 2010-01-15 19:23:00 | Beetle, I don't know if it would be cheaper or not, but how about a wet floor bathroom? Friends have done this recently. Tiled the floor, put in a shower but not a shower cubicle. It looks brilliant and didn't cost them a lot although to be fair she did some of the work herself. |

| 848603 | 2010-01-15 20:56:00 | ok yesterday i went to our local renovators centre................... but i had a problem cos i forgot to measure the shower before i went, but they do have some shower parts there, walls, panels, doors and floors, both in the white and the fawn....... i looked and poked about and thought what do it need. and then i went to mega mitre 10 as they have actual bathrooms set up in store for ideas........ and i must say i do like the idea of a wet floor tile one, but not sure if my bathroom is big enough or will suit that........ i have a concrete floor which is good i guess? i will have to do some measuring and ripping apart i guess.... all ideas welcome....... beetle :) |

| 848604 | 2010-01-15 21:26:00 | The house I was living at a couple of years ago had that arrangement, the floor was done in a piece of vinyl. And to create the shower you would only have to hang a curtain around a corner, or a piece of glass off the wall. Would probaly save you alot of money really, especially if you already have a shower head on the wall because you could use that with new fittings. You would still want to regib which if you did your self you just have to make sure that you put something around the shower area, you can get sheets of tiles stuff, about 100 bucks for 1200x1800 from memory. Quite easy to hang as well. Only thing that could be interesting is putting a drain in the concrete floor |

| 848605 | 2010-01-15 23:42:00 | Wet area bathrooms are all the rage but it means your whole floor must be sloped towards the drain. If you also have a toilet in there then you may have the problem of wet footprints in and out. That's assuming the shower splashes quite a lot of the floor - even a curtain won't stop that. Personally I think those semi-triangular shower boxes are ideal. Cost about $900 and take less space than a square box. Plus a moveable shower head on a hose - you can take it off its attachment and use it to wash down the walls. Or in my case to wash the cat. :D |
