848040 2010-01-12 20:53:00 rother had standalone drivers for Win 7 x64 (without the apps) for this Brother 215-c. (came out last year). Whereas Vista x64 doesnt. Its got the drivers and the apps (which I dont need). I know you can do a custom install so the apps dont install, but why bother with a bigger download. Theyre already on XP. And it was a piece of cake installing the drivers from Win7, so I could print to the printer, which has XP on it

Man speedy you are a computer geek none of this made any sense to me.

848041 2010-01-12 21:07:00 What model?

I had one for 8 years, alas it finally ate itself.

My current one did the fail at a crucial moment recently. It decided 2 of my quite new cartridges were stuffed - not empty, stuffed. WHo knows, maybe they were but it took forever, I got the black but as it was right on Xmas had to wait for the other.
Driving round friends printing essentials off theirs wasn't fun.

An HP7260 Photosmart. I also have a near new Canon IP4600 which is handy for better quality photos or use when I run out of HP cartridges.

Well in English there's win7 x64 drivers for the old brother printer here. Vista x64 doesnt have drivers for it. And the PC the printer is connected to has XP on it (understand that)

You go to a computer store that is closing down

 Well the short answer then. If you use Win 7 x64, (with this printer) then you can install (just the printer drivers) , - so you can print from Windows 7 to XP (without all the crap brother programs - like the program that shows you how much ink is left in the printer, or a program that lets you scan), which probably wont work. Since the printer isnt physically connected to the computer thats got windows 7 on it.

Its connected to the printer via ethernet

There are 2 types of driver download.

The driver alone (standalone)
The driver plus bundled crap disguising itself as importnat monitoring sw.

You can Custom install the bundled crap download so that you choose to just install the driver by itself but it's a bigger download.

They were available for Win7 64bit.

They weren't for Vista 64bit.
