1129920 2010-12-09 09:52:00 cheers - will try now sooby (15023)
1129921 2010-12-09 10:14:00 well that was a waste of time!

configured PC to boot from USB drive containing memtest auto-installer first and nothing...

guess I'll try the windows repair option next

1129922 2010-12-09 10:22:00 It may have to be bootable.. If its an auto installer, did you install it to the flash drive, while in windows? Speedy Gonzales (78)
1129923 2010-12-09 11:10:00 Just use the CD or Floppy, it's much easier. USB drives are a major headache to get working. Agent_24 (57)
1129924 2010-12-13 19:20:00 ok, booted memtest from floppy & running now...

its been going for 11 & a half hours, how long is it meant to take exactly??

It says it has scanned 8 times, and picked up:
test: 8,
pass: 0,
one failing address 0007d027418 - 2000.1MB,
good: fabe9cb9,
bad: fafe9cb9,
err-bits: 00400000.
count chan: 1

any ideas?

1129925 2010-12-13 20:58:00 It runs in a loop indefinitely until you press "Escape" and cancel it.

As you can see, it has performed the test 8 times so far, and has picked up 1 error.
This error could well be what is causing your problems... but only once in 11 hours?

Doesn't your PC crash more often than that?

1129926 2010-12-13 21:13:00 cheers agent,

Hasn't seemed to crash for maybe 4 or 5 days now (altho I guess we only use it 4 hours per day).

I'm happy this at least gives me a start point for fixing the issue now its been identified.

Does this result mean I need new memory, or is this something that can be patched on the fly?

On restarting after memtest we got this message flashing up:

Since windows was first activated on this computer the hardware on the computer has changed significantly. due to these changes windows must be reactivated within 3 days. do you want to reactivate now y/n?

I've got the original windows CD that came with the computer, it is still wrapped in cellophane (as the shop that made the PC originally must have used their copy?) Is it as simple as loading the CD to re-validate etc?

1129927 2010-12-13 21:31:00 Just tell it to reactivate via the internet. Snorkbox (15764)
1129928 2010-12-13 21:41:00 ah, that'll be why - I disconnected from the net to work from another PC while the memtest was going!

Sweet, here's hoping going online will solve *that* issue & I just need to focus on this stuffed memory causing the BSOD.

Such a contrast: our computer doesn't seem to ever have run right from day 1, (always something wrong). Whereas the machines at work haven't had a single blue screen in 5 years of 8hour plus day use...

1129929 2010-12-13 21:45:00 I would try to isolate the bad RAM stick and replace it. How many RAM sticks do you have? Snorkbox (15764)
