1131417 2010-08-24 20:16:00 Google has found a number of Broadband Usage Meters but some seem to collect the information from the ISP .

Now we all know the ISP meter can be hours behind real-time, so I’m looking for an accurate Real-Time local Meter so I can pinpoint just how much certain programmes are using .

I’m looking for something I can read, then read an hour later, to see what was used in that hour . I’d better mention that it has to cover Automatic Downloads, Outlook Express, Firefox Browsing, Skype, in other words all traffic .

I note there have been a number discussed over the years, but I can’t find any consensus as to what works best .

All suggestions appreciated . :thanks

1131418 2010-08-24 21:08:00 You need something then in the router, try WebGauge or Gargoyle.

Web-based ones are slow to update.
Per-PC software apps won't catch things such as cellphones, consoles, TiVo etc

1131419 2010-08-25 11:26:00 Windows 7 and Vista have some decent Network Monitor gadgets for free, they monitor your usage sufficiently, Total for this session and total, both resettable and both upload and download rates.

Jesus christ I've been a traitor and been on the Tom's hardware forums lately, sorry guys :x

1131420 2010-08-25 11:38:00 I was looking into a similar item for a customer a few weeks back to monitor his kids internet usage.

One I found that works is Track4Win (http://www.track4win.com/) - it will monitor the PC you are on as well as any LAN connected PC - it collects real time data from any PC and sends back to a main PC if you want. No need to even touch the router.

It will show ANY internet activity, as well as what programs are being used and the amount of traffic used by that program, the time it was used etc. See the screen shots on their site.

It can run in stealth mode as well so the person doesn't even know its running on their PC, NO performance hit at all, it can be completely hidden.

I did such a good job of trying it, I hid it from myself

Some Antivirus software mark it as malware - and really its doing what malware does, log PC usage - BUT its completely harmless. So if your AV detects it, you have to make an exception rule like I did for Nod32.

Suggestion -- dont go hiding the program till you get to use it, other wise its almost impossible to remove, you can hide it from add/remove programs, task manager, in any mode safe or logged in as administrator.

Its got a trial but may be enough to see if it does what you want.

1131421 2010-08-25 11:50:00 hi there,well why you not tire the du2 monitor software.... Yanni3 (15942)
1131422 2010-08-25 11:57:00 Linksys routers have a "network magic" monitoring system, but not for free. You get a 30 day free trial and it seemed to work really well with plenty of info .... didn't bother buying it after the trial period finished .... few smacks around the kids left ears with a piece of 4 x 2 seemed to remedy bandwidth problems satisfactorily. :devil SP8's (9836)
1131423 2010-08-25 11:59:00 I use TUC from www.tuc.co.nz. Does all I need but you may want more. It is free. Snorkbox (15764)
1131424 2010-08-25 12:04:00 Geeze Snork ... hope that wasn't your last bill  SP8's (9836)
1131425 2010-08-25 12:48:00 Nope! I don't get bills like that. Snorkbox (15764)
1131426 2010-08-25 23:37:00 Thanks Guys.

The position at this stage is it’s not worth me changing Router/Modem of purchasing any Firmware.

Wainui’s suggestion looks fine but I don’t think I can justify spending $A39 just to prove my guess is right. :D

And Snorkbox’s suggestion looks like it would be just fine but it doesn’t support my ISP. (kinect).

I wonder whether TUC can be tweaked to “kinect”?
