849573 2010-01-18 02:30:00 My desktop comp. is in my man cave (synonym for the untidy room downstairs).
Have just changed my modem from an old D link DSL 302G with a free Thomson TG585 wireless modem from Telecom as they recently upgraded our roadside cabinet to ADSL and despite the inadequacies of Telecom it is certainly much faster

The wife now wants a laptop upstairs in her room,(we do meet at mealtimes!)

Currently I'm connected by the ethernet cable. Can I continue to link my desktop this way and use the wireless link solely for the laptop? Or is it preferably or necessary to use the wireless link to both?

849574 2010-01-18 02:35:00 Should be no problem to have a mixture of wired/wireless. inphinity (7274)
849575 2010-01-18 02:43:00 Thanks inphinity,it will also save me buying a USB wireless adapter as my desktop has no internal card bonzo29 (2348)
849576 2010-01-18 02:45:00 Wireless is not my field of experience but we run a mix of wired and wireless in our house.

My office is where the desktop, printer etc are all located, that is plugged into a DSL modem of some sort that goes into the wall jack.

I also have a work laptop and like to use it on the deck. I used to run a 30m cable from the office to the deck but with the addition of 3 more laptops for the wife and children, to avoid a mess of tangled cables, I went and got a DLink, 524 I think it was.

And even with no total lack of experience in setting up a wireless network, I set it up so the wireless plugs into the modem which then plugs into the wall, in affect gives us 8 ports to play with as both were 4 port routers not that I have ever had to use them.

So, yes, you can run a mix of wireless and cable to suit the needs of your house and family.

849577 2010-01-18 11:07:00 I've set up a thompson before, from memory they have ethernet ports, so you should be fine to run wireless and wired at the same time.

Technology's great innit?

849578 2010-01-18 11:41:00 They are designed to run the on board Ethernet switch and Wireless AP at the same time. That is why they have both Agent_24 (57)

There SHOULD be a CD in the box and if you use that it's simple.
I would ring Telecom and ask for the installation CD if it wasn't enclosed
I personally wouldn't try to install without it but I'm not a nerd!

A thompson arrived two doors from my place yesterday. No CD but an instruction leaflet came with it.

Even a politician should be able to follow the leaflet. It's got pictures like comic books even.
