1130978 2010-08-25 03:35:00 There are several programs mentioned that can tell a person what the actual motherboard is.
Even actually looking to see what the board is would be a help-- BUT this information is not exactly fast in being made available.

I've got a Older board in the workshop - without the jumpers on the front Audio header, you wont get any sound anywhere, esp if the front audio is not connected to the case.

Yes, a number of older boards which use AC'97 audio standard require the front panel header or two return jumpers to be plugged into the board to allow the 'loopback' for the rear audio output jack to actually work.

Without these jumpers or front audio with return path inbuilt, there is nothing to complete the circuit.

The free home version of Everest (v2.20) was discontinued 5 years ago, so it is pretty useless.

The Ultimate edition however is very good (And the 30 day trial is more than enough for this situation)

1130979 2010-08-25 03:50:00 That sounds right with the onboard. What if it's a separate soundcard? That didnt work either. It probably wouldn't matter, if the front panel audio was connected or not. If it was/is a separate soundcard.

So Smith, once you reinstall Windows, (connect the front audio), dont install the sound drivers. check hardware ids under the entry (for the soundcard) in device manager. Highlight the entry that appears here - Ctrl-C to copy whats here then paste it in here Ctrl-V. Then we'll know for sure WHAT audio drivers you're meant to install.
