850390 2010-01-22 06:26:00 What can debt collectors do? Can they come to your home banging on doors and start threatening people? Can they come in and take your TV and your furniture?

They can only take items if they are what the debt is over, and you've stopped payment, ie the TV is on HP, and you don't pay, then they can take the TV. That's because, legally, the TV is the property of the finance company.

They can't take anything that isn't theirs, don't let 'em in the door if they mention repossession, they already have the car.

Other than that, they can only pester you or take you to court.

That's the warrant of distress.
But the stuff taken needs to clearly belong to the debtor and they can only take up to that amount. They cannot take your flatmate's flash laptop or your whole jewellery box. They may need a idemnity form to be filled out should they have to return stuff. They cannot force entry house but can enter shed or garage - what happens if that was a internal access garage :confused:

If it was a student, no job, no asset, $200 in the bank, no furniture - like flatting or living in a student hostel, a few jeans and t shirt, 2 peices of pizzas in the fridge and a half can of Speights hey ..
