1130840 2010-08-25 12:45:00 Using something like g729 instead of g711 may also help :)

If you were with 2talk I'd suggest iLBC over g729, but I don't think the Linksys supports it either ... so it's a moot point really :p

1130841 2010-08-25 21:45:00 I wouldn't want to use G729 as my primary voice codec as it's like talking on a bad cellfone call. My 2talk line at home if G711 and sounds as good as my landline. paulw (1826)
1130842 2010-08-25 23:28:00 Most businesses I've setup g729 for can't even tell the difference.

GSM on the other hand, is terrible...

1130843 2010-08-26 01:38:00 All the PBX systems we install are all G711. Carrier grade speech not substandard.. paulw (1826)
1130844 2010-08-26 06:34:00 That's great when you're in the same country, but when you're linking PBX systems from Aus, USA and Fiji, quite often because of the additional bandwidth requirements you may end up with a worse quality call compared to compressing it with iLBC.

But that's comparing apples with oranges here, and you're talking about an enterprise PBX as opposed to a home users VoIP adapter.

1130845 2010-08-26 21:56:00 But even the home user should go for the best quality speech they can get. It's a bit like saying that home user should have substandard broadband service to that of companies where both are using ADSL. paulw (1826)
1130846 2010-08-26 23:17:00 True, unless that's what is giving them worse quality overall.

It's all very well and good to say "Lets do g711, it's ISDN quality", but the fact is it uses more bandwidth. Sometimes, when that bandwidth is a premium, you will get better quality calls by using a compressed codec such as g729 or iLBC, because it's going to be losing less packets and therefor less of the call data.
