You would need to claim the amount you have lost, off the thief. It is not fair but that is one reason people have car insurance. |

| 850382 | 2010-01-21 06:17:00 | If a vehicle is stolen and recovered (usually by Police) it needs an authority to tow (and pay) by the owner. If you didn't give authority I can't see you are liable for costs .. unless it was simply abandoned and your Council wanted it off the street and arranged the tow. Even then you should have been given the chance to recover it yourself. You say you "don't want it". Well, as the owner (registered or not) you can't just hope someone will steal it and take the problem off your hands ... it's a boomerang that keeps coming back. Ring a scrap metal yard, see if they will take it, and save you incurring a third tow fee next time it's "borrowed"! |

| 850384 | 2010-01-21 07:29:00 | Wellington. Yup they pondering about it the tribunal. We didn't give persmission for it to be towed. We assume it runs. Needs a alternator fix, they would had to jump it to steal the car. |

Needs a alternator fix, they would had to jump it to steal the car . If it was on private property, such as a car park witha towing sign, then the land owner possibily asked for it to be towed away . The question is, how did the towie know it was stolen? Did the police ask the towie to tow it? I would have thought if the police had found it, that they would have contacted you first, to arrange for it to be towed . You perhaps need to find out from the towie, who contracted them, as in some circumstances the person who contracted them could be liable for the fees . |

It was on our private property when it was stolen from us. It has been sitting there for nearly a year. How did towie know - dunno. 1st time we paid towie. 2nd time, we were contacted by police when stolen - we told them even if they find it we don't want. When it was recovered, got a phonecall from Police saying it was already with the towie and ask if we want it back. We were not told it was going to be towed. |

Put the Audi outside and put the old car in the garage and then drive it to the scrap yard after a jump start incase they steal it again. The 2nd time it was stolen within 48hrs. |

OK, so I guess the police asked for it to be towed, and I guess they are allowed to do that under legislation . Pretty stink they didn't call you first about it before towing it, but I guess they have higher priorities . |

We advised them at the time when it was stolen and records show - that to advise us before they tow. We were not advised. They advised us that they had no authority to tow til they get our permission. What can debt collectors do? Can they come to your home banging on doors and start threatening people? Can they come in and take your TV and your furniture? If this was a student, no job, no asset, what can they do? Get a loan from WINZ  Apply for 1 of the 2 insolvency avenues? |
