850139 2010-01-20 02:49:00 I think there's quite a different in what power companies charge - SWMBO's parents live at the other end of Mosgiel from us, and they regularly have $300+ bills . . . . they're with Contact, and we're with Meridian . I'm currently paying 16 . 46c per unit . . . . is that cheap?

It surely is!!! We are with Meridian in ChCh and pay 21 . 47c for the daytime rate and 11 . 46c for the night rate . Our daily rate of 16 . 70c was back in 2005 . :(

I'm actually about to contact Mercury Energy as their prices are currently quite a bit cheaper for us but I need to find out when they are proposing to increase their prices . Meridian's prices are frozen until October .

I think maybe you should stick with power at that rate .

850140 2010-01-20 02:56:00 Yeah I actually had an e-mail from Meridian a few months back saying that our usage was so low we were borderline eligible for the special rate that bach's/holiday houses qualify for!! :D

If I go to gas, then I'll definitely qualify. I should add that I actually bake a lot too, so our oven is constantly on, and yesterday I made a batch of rhubarb chutney that took 3 1/2 hours' cooking!!

850141 2010-01-20 02:59:00 A related question. Occasionally you get the mail outs or the door knockers who say come to our power company for a contracted 1yr (or something) and we will fix the price for you.

I have also heard that those who have signed up to it was more expensive. I don't know the details. Maybe change of terms or middle man so they increase rates, maybe price came down a bit and they were locked in. Dunno. Anyone had experience?

But will the price of gas be cheaper for your usage than what you are paying for power now? That's what you need to work out .

I have heard of one Meridian customer who, after transferring to Mercury, was offered a 20% prompt payment discount if they came back to Meridian, instead of a 10% discount .

If I do switch I will most certainly be negotiating and playing one against the other to get the better deal .
