1131606 2010-08-26 02:00:00 I don't think they have any legal resonsiblity vis a vis the incompetent.

Well no they don't but any competent helpdesk just does not restrict support to just getting the modem connected. It ranges from fixing browser problems, setting up email clients, and checking computer settings that may be causing connectivity problems and many other things as well.

In the case that pctek had if the ISP was trying to set a new username in the modem without the LAN enabled this would not have been possible.
To then say that it is a computer problem and to see a tech is just unreasonable and poor quality service.
Your comment "How on earth is the ISP expected to troubleshoot a fault on your PC" would be valid if it was a fault on the PC but it was an incorrect setting that anyone with even a basic knowledge should be able to rectify by checking the few obvious things that can cause a NIC to not get an IP address.

1131608 2010-08-26 05:00:00 The ISP should have been able to fix that, it is a very common cause of no internet. Not very good support.
That is the first thing to check when the modem IP is not being picked up.
In the LAN settings even if it is showing enabled, clicking disable and then enable again or a repair is all that is required normally.

I'm struggling to try and remember whether I've ever been asked if the NIC was disabled. Perhaps they get that information when they ask for the ipconfig details?

Anyway, good one for fixing it pctek, even if it did take you a while.

:

If you do an ipconfig you should get some result . The addresses may be wrong, or totally correct, but not have nothing at all . So if there's nothing at all, then it's not even seeing the modem or even trying, which would indicate something with the NIC .

Except I was getting her to do the ipconfig to get the modem address so I could get her to go into it . And busy thinking of what I'd be doing if A)She couldn't follow
step by steps B)Couldn't fix over phone, so I obliviously bypassed the NIC until ages later .

Duh .

1131610 2010-08-26 08:28:00 Is it possible malware disabled the NIC? I just fixed a computer where malware disabled almost all services. As a result no hardware worked, device manager was not visible, and no internet connectivity.

To be fair to the malware though, the computer ran a lot faster!! :clap

Good on you for having the patience to work through the issues, if I can't solve it in 5 minutes, bring it to my place and I'll sort it there........

1131611 2010-08-26 12:16:00 We'd have to be gods if we didn't have these sorts of moments. It is always 'obvious' what we should have done first after the problem is fixed!

But, yep, ipconfig is a goodie early in the piece.

1131612 2010-08-26 12:30:00 I don't think ISP's are required to help if it's not 'their problem', but a good ISP should be more than happy to help a customer out with troubleshooting. jareemon (5207)

if I can't solve it in 5 minutes, bring it to my place and I'll sort it there . . . . . . . .

She couldn't do that - she's at the other end of the country .

No she did it . After asking me how this could have happened, she remembered becoming annoyed with the "icon down the bottom and clicking it to make it go away" .

I guess the LAN connection icon in the taskbar . . . . . .
