850191 2010-01-21 19:58:00 Is that for real ?
I have never heard of a mass exodus to anything Microsoft aside from Windows and Office.
What was wrong with 4 ?

Well once people found out MSSE removed MORE than Avast 4, they changed AV programs. I would try Avast 5 out on the other PC, BUT going by their forum, its got probs. Like what I posted in the previous link

850192 2010-01-21 22:06:00 Yes but an av program must not only find and remove viruses, but have a small footprint, not take ages to update.
I have not know any M$ programs to have a small footprint !
AVG 4 was very good in these areas. Lets hope that they don't go the way AVG did and get into bloatware.

I will check out that M$ one, but I cant believe there has been a mass exodus by pc experts, Moms and Dads will get it installed when they buy a new PC, like they did Norton.

850193 2010-01-21 23:26:00 Think everyone's gone off v4. And moved to MS's one.

Not everyone. I haven't. Despite what everyone says about how good the MS one is, I still don't trust Microsoft enough to use it. It wasn't all that long ago that everyone here were saying they would never trust or use any AV associated with MS.

Haven't upgraded to Avast 5 yet either, and have to admit that the reported problems are making me nervous. Should I strike problems with it myself I will be looking elsewhere.

850194 2010-01-21 23:46:00 if you wanted to hide a good piece of software, putting MS on the label was pretty effective. Now there's yet another security technique M$ have ruined. ;) R2x1 (4628)
850195 2010-01-22 00:52:00 Well even after applying the fix for MSSE I'm not happy with the CPU usage. it's dropped, but not enough.

Installed Avast 5, quite pleased with it so far. I know it's not as effective, but still pretty reasonable in conjunction with malwarebytes and another app or two. Avast 5 is light as! Like....really light. NOD32 light. :2cents: +1 for whoever commented on the orange icon though, it needs to be green or blue, or another nice colour, orange does indeed give the impression of an issue with the AV software.

MS dont have a good track record with their past AV: instead of scanning email as it comes down, a previous MS AV has scanned AFTER the email was downloaded & then cleaned by deleting all email.Who tested this stuff :sleep:sleep:sleep
Its just wait & see how long MS actively continue to fully support it.
So MS AV may be OK for short term solution

getting off topic a bit, sorry(just a Friday rant)
Popularity is no measure of effectiveness with AV/spyware programs( hello Norton), but MS AV seems to get the thumbs up (more or less) from those in the know on this forum.

850197 2010-01-22 02:08:00 Based on what I heard I dumped Avast 4 for MSE and haven't yet tried Avast 5

Going on Wainuitech tests I won't be going back to Avast yet.

Note that I haven't had a virus on this computer yet and so it appears that everything works as expected.
