Just bought this car and found that there is a "Shift Lock" button near to the Gear lever. Couldn't figure out what's that function of this 'Shift Lock'. There is no user manual in the glove box. Any Toyota owners out there can enlighten me on this button?

Cheers

851822 2010-01-25 07:12:00 It is for when the transmission jams.
For instance, I have twice had problems when parked on an uphill slope and I couldn't get out of "Park" - press the button and it by-passes the interlock system.

For this reason, I always keep an old umbrella in the car with a narrow point on the end (my button is recessed) Also, it's good when it rains. (the umbrella, that is)

Press the shift lock button and the selection (gear) lever can be moved

851824 2010-01-25 07:38:00 I see. So, it's meant to unlock the gear lever rather than to 'LOCK' the level!

A little mis-leading, eh?

851825 2010-01-25 19:03:00 It means the ability to shift is locked unless you use it and that is misleading? Cicero (40)

It's a matter of interpretation; and IF it's a matter of interpretation, it IS mis-leading.

Precisely, it switches on the light; we NOT only use them in the dark but is also recommended to switch it on during the day. Correct me if I'm wrong, in some countries, it's mandatory to switch them on day and night. Can't remember which countries, though.

Not anywhere they have Lucas. The smoke is a visibility hazard.
