| 851386 | 2010-01-24 19:55:00 | nz.news.yahoo.com Maori Party co-leader Tariana Turia says higher tobacco taxes should be imposed and used to pay for stomach stapling operations. Mrs Turia is recovering from such an operation as part of her efforts to battle diabetes. Sorry but I think penalising one group of people for anothers inability to control themselves is totally off. How about they eliminate sugar and sugary foods and reduce carbohydrates instead? I could say f** b****. |

| 851387 | 2010-01-24 20:04:00 | Some people have suggested putting a tax on Big Macs etc but what about those who call into McDonalds very rarely and don't have Diabetes and are not obese? I suggest that stomach stapling for those that need it just come out of the normal health budget. Then we would not have to subsidise the medication that diabetes sufferers need thus saving money and these obese people can get back to work and therefore pay taxes. Probably that idea is too easy though. |

At the moment all of us non-smokers are penalised by smokers' "inability to control themselves"! You are whingeing about paying a bit more tax to pay for the consequences of smokers' habits, whilst the rest of us pay squillions to provide health care for smokers' self inflicted and completely predictable health problems. My mind boggles at the illogicality of your post. :waughh: Personally, I would raise tobacco tax high enough so that smokers would pay for the yearly cost smokers impose on the rest of the population. I could say f** b****. So could I - but it would be about your post. |

Or you could look into it and discover that the tax on tobacco is not only paying for all associated health costs but turning over a tidy profit, The question was raised and answered in Parliament a couple of years ago. If you take tobacco out of the equation people will still get ill, require medical attention, hospital stays, and will still die. |

With that way of thinking how about upping the price of gas then, why not walk, or how about alcohol, or fast foods, or taxing factory or every animal that wees and does number 2s, or the whole lot and use to stitch up fat politicians who could have avoided it in the first place? |
