852032 2010-02-10 02:08:00 If its a windows exploit, I doubt a router firewall would block it completely. Or at all. If there's a fix you install it. Then you'll have less chance of getting hit by it

The router firewall doesn't even need to block it. The nature of NAT is that unless configured otherwise, no connection attempt to the public IP address will be passed on to any local computers.

Of course, any browser-based exploits are another story. But if the user doesn't use IE that shouldn't be an issue.

852033 2010-02-10 02:23:00 Browser based exploits don't require you to click on anything dodgy.

They often don't even require you to visit a dodgy website, a while back even Trend Micro (Antivirus vendor) had their website infected by a drive-by-download browser exploit.

There are many avenues to infection. USB drives are also a notable method these days, and so even without internet connections your computers can still be vulnerable.

In my opinion running without the latest security updates and at least some kind of AntiVirus is just asking for trouble. Same for people who don't do backups.

852035 2010-02-10 03:10:00 Well speaking of removing malware, if you were going to inc MBAM and Iobit security 360, forget about the latter. Since it looks like (MBAM have accused Iobit) of stealing their database updates, to detect / pick up malware.

In other words, whatever MBAM picks up (whatever name comes up in MBAM), Iobit's program will pick up the same thing, with the same name lol. Pretty sneaky, I must say. And most download sites have removed IS 360 from their sites. Because of this. Obviously, Iobit deny this accusation. So, if you brought IS 360, then you probably wasted your money. Since MBAM will do the same thing. And it looks like another program Iobit makes looks similar to HJT (it's log - Systemcare Pro). Iobit got caught out, because MBAM added some fake malware entries to their database, and surprise, surprise every time they added the fake names, they appeared in IS 360's database a few days later.

Ofcourse, I forgot about NAT ignoring random requests .

I remember reading about the trend micro site hack .

USB drives with autorun in XP are rather evil . I use debian now so it isnt an issue .

Googles ChromeOS idea of booting a verified safe read only operating system is a very interesting idea . Ofcourse having your data in the 'cloud' is another issue .
