853082 2010-01-29 02:33:00 I remember on 60 Minutes (or was it Sunday) a few years back they had a NZ citizen who joined up with the French Foreign Legion. Buggered if I can find that episode.

I hope you know how to speak French already.

853083 2010-01-29 03:32:00 Get your heart checked out Wolf. I had asthma for years (mainly brought on by exercise) - when I had a heart bypass, my asthma cleared up and I haven't touched an inhaler since. Apparently asthma can present and appear to be asthsma but it can mask symptoms of heart disease.

Heart disease isn't curable, but it is treatable, although the Army would probably not look kindly on heart disease either, but at least you wouldn't be dropping dead unexpectedly....
It sounds like:

You might have had heart failure prior to the bypass. Consequently, there is an accumulation of fluid in the lung due to the decreased clearance. This is manifested in the form of "shortness of breath" clinically, which is also the number one symptom of asthma.

Which is my point.

NZ has a huge incidence of heart disease. It also has a huge incidence of asthma. The one may be mistaken for the other, even by professionals who aren't actually looking too hard for an underlying cause of a symptom.

Heart disease is often only diagnosed AFTER a heart attack.

Therefore, if you have asthma, it is worth getting the heart check to ensure the asthma is not actually heart failure in disguise.

The first thing the cardiologist said to me in hospital was that I had beaten the odds. More than 50% of heart attack victims don't even make it to hospital.

"The volunteers are down from 12 to 8 as the training in the scorching desert sun takes its toll on mind and body. They're dropping like flies and the medic is battling to keep them on their feet."

Yes I work Sunday night also.

I watched some of it on Youtube. Bad representation of the Legion. Firstly, it's a bunch of guys doing training by some ex-Legionnaires in the desert. Shows nothing about the Legion itself, except for some history and some training.

And bob doe nz, you don't need to know a word of French to join. Sure it helps, but they teach you in basic.
