1132820 2010-08-31 06:20:00 ...yeah because 9/10 people here are on 100m/bit connections or greater, of course, makes sense, tailor your advice for them ...

No Speedtest "often" mis-reports above 6mb ish.

Most obvious example is 10MB+ Telstra Cable users often show Speedtest as inaccurate over real world performance.

I have tested multiple DSL connections over the years where real world downloading can be done at say 11MB/s and speedtest only ever hits 6 or 7 on the local server (slow hop)

Any tool that is wrong maybe 4/10 is worthless, SURE it "can" be accurate sometimes.

Speedtest.net is crap and I have flamed PCworld articles in the past for using it.

1132821 2010-08-31 09:27:00 Please don't talk that way, I can get really upset when I hear stuff like 10 or 11 MB/s, I am grateful for a top speed of 1.5 MB/s( only occasionally achieved) and am awaiting with great anticipation for an exchange upgrade next year. PPp (9511)

I've just had my cabinet upgraded recently. Now I get connected at 13Mbit. Doesn't help though, Telecom then shut down Big Time a month after. So, I have nice speed, but only at 20GB cap. Managed to waste 13GB the first day because I didn't check. (I can see I'll be on 64k by next week!)

Also, half the time my router won't sync properly the first startup any more, have to reboot a couple of times. So I'm sure there is *still* something wrong with my line.

Oh, and since I'm only 200 metres from the cabinet, I am technically in the 24Mbit zone. But I'm only getting half of that.

You're lucky with your slow connection, you can't accidentally chew through your data nearly as fast as I can :crying

1132824 2010-08-31 13:02:00 Currently:
Noise Margin: 10.6 dB / 13.0 dB
Line Attenuation: 14.5 dB / 5.8 dB
(Down / Up)

Dug up some old screenshots I took 2 years ago, this is what it was:

Noise Margin: 11.8 dB / 34 dB
Line Attenuation: 54.5 dB / 33.7 dB

1132825 2010-08-31 22:58:00 Yeah it's not quite the best. Here, this may help:

Attenuation Rates:
20bB. and below = Outstanding
20dB-30dB. = Excellent
30dB-40dB. = Very Good
40dB-50dB. = Good
50dB-60dB. = Poor and may experience connectivity issues
60dB. and above = Bad and will experience connectivity issues

For S/N Margin Readings:
6bB. or below = Bad and will experience no line synchronisation or intermittent synchronisation problems.
7dB-10dB. = Fair but does not leave much room for variances in conditions.
11dB-20dB. = Good with little or no synchronisation problems
20dB-28dB. = Excellent
29dB. or above = Outstanding

1132826 2010-08-31 23:48:00 Yeah, I read that before... So my attenuation is outstanding now but my noise margin is pathetic. Well that is just weird. I'd have thought both would have become a lot better...

But then reading this: "Generally speaking, as overall bandwidth increases, your Signal to Noise ratio decreases."

So, it has probably increased the quality but then my speed has gone from 2Mbit to 13Mbit so that may be why the value has stayed almost the same?

It's not that much of an issue though, once it does get going it's pretty damn stable. Ran it for nearly a week solid 2-3 weeks ago and never had a disconnect the whole time.
