Military pretty on to that rort.
American army before recession gave light asthmatics a medical waiver but not any more they got as many recruits as they need now.

853064 2010-01-28 22:59:00 None that I joined up with killed anyone....

Nevertheless, that is what you are trained for.

853065 2010-01-28 23:12:00 I'm glad that Wolf was rejected... NZ'ers have a fantastic military record. If the powers that be decided he wasn't fit enough then that's good for me.

I've got a mate who not only server NZ but also did 4 years in the FFL. Kids who have asthma can't really expect to qualify for either.

Part of the training. Its more being prepared than training to kill.
There is so much more to it these days, but unless you see for yourself I guess you'll never know.

Either you're full of **** or your mate was a deserter. Contract for the FFL is 5 years minimum. Not easy to get out before that either, as they take your passport etc.

Yep, FFL is 5 years. Money is crap, treatment is worse. And desertion is pretty serious.

NZ army is 16 year contract if I remember correctly, is it easy to get out?

Gutted for you Wolf, but I know people who are in the Navy...
Did you go for enlisted or did you try for a commission?
I would think you might have a shot at a commission.

I know overseas you could get a waiver for asthma if the specialists say you'll be alright. Could you do this here too?

853070 2010-01-28 23:37:00 Aussies pretty good, Id seriously go there if that is what you want to do. And they have better pay etc rob_on_guitar (4196)
853071 2010-01-28 23:40:00 NZ Army no contract as such, depending on trade you have to do return service (usually something like 2 years).

Commission = reserve/territorials?

Am going to doctors on Monday, he'd already told me he said he thought I'd be fine for enlistment in the Army, and I told them that, but it didn't seem to change anything.

Anyone know if Aussies take on asthmatics? Heard they did?
