2010-01-26 21:12:00 | Am I the only person around here who doesn't bother to run an AV or seperate firewall? I only run them If I'm using a computer with XP, but I havent had any problems with vista and 7. They seem to have been secure enough as it is. Maybe I will install Security essentials tonight and see if I have anything haha Haven't used any antivirus/maleware/spyware/etc software in over a year. Been running win7 RC version something-a-rather (one of the latest ones released). The other day I installed NOD32, updated and then did a full system scan - nothing found. Ran HJT and found nothing nasty - just a few duds that would help system boot time. Slightly out of touch with antivirus etc software, but is NOD's spyware scanner 'good enough'? Or should I run Spybot and MalewareBytes and see what they find too?

2010-01-26 23:57:00 | To the techs and OP: Would the computer have got infected if the user was using a limited account?Limited Accounts do slow it down, but dont stop it completely. I have worked on Many PC's that have limited accounts and they still get malware - but not as much. This article more or less explains it ---- Prevention is harder than the cure. There are times, regardless of what account they are logged in where the system can also get infected by just visiting an infected site, or browsing a webpage that has malicious file embedded to exploit the users applications e.g. Internet browsers, Adobe, flash, java etc. Malware writers are still out there busy finding ways to create a malicious code that can infect your system even on users running under limited privileges. Worm/Trojan that exploits some weakness in Windows software service, so that it wouldnt matter what account the user is logged on to. In most cases, its just a matter of a user clicking to update an already installed programs e.g. Media Player etc. When video streaming, using media player or any player where it prompts to download some codecs needed which in fact just a trick to download the malicious file

Straight answer NO - for nods antispyware ! You should have at least two other Antimalware programs - I usually install Spyware Terminator and Spybot, as well as Malwarebytes Sometimes. The problem with manual ones, is most people forget to run them. |

2010-01-27 04:01:00 | I installed NOD32 Trial, scanned, nothing. Installed Security Essentials, nothing. Just finished doing spybot and nothing. I think computer literate people can probarbly keep their computers clean without antivirus software- knowing what looks safe and what doesn't, etc. I can't remember the last time I had a virus. Not that I check to be honest. It probarbly wouldn't hurt to install a freebie, like security essentials. But I can't see the point if I manage to keep my PC Clean without it.

2010-01-27 08:52:00 | I have seen virus wipe out machines with various AV in the past. AVG is pretty solid (not the best). In its defence your inclined to get the most clueless home users using it, the type that will use Limewire to download apps (exe's) frequently etc. About a month ago I scanned a machines HDD running Security Essentials with AVG and it picked up a virus. I dont judge Security Essentials on that incident because I know its just timing with definitions and specific viruses.

2010-01-27 09:38:00 | Just today picked up another PC -- obvious infections -- AVG was disabled by the infections and it was only installed from what I was told 2 weeks ago on a fresh install. | wainuitech (129) | |
2010-01-27 09:58:00 | I find AVG fine as do millions of other users around the globe. Avast I have had problems with wont touch it again with a barge pole. Dont know why this forum is a AVG haters society, maybe because its not cool for conformists who aren't NATO PC users.
