1132011 2010-08-28 00:11:00 Router firewall only blocks things coming in, not going out (and even then it's not usually that good)

ummm wat?

any standard DSL router uses NAT which will block all unsolicited incoming traffic 100% of the time (unless you have a specific rule/portmap to allow certain incoming traffic).

I have not heard of any hacks that successfully fool NAT to allow incoming connections, would love to hear it if you know otherwise.

1132013 2010-08-28 00:25:00 No firewall needed. Router + NAT is more than sufficient for almost all people ;) Chilling_Silence (9)
1132014 2010-08-28 01:57:00 Thanks guys.
So it looks like for Windows 7 its Micosoft Firewall.

@Agent24 - I found Comodo very hard to understand.

Unfortunately it does require a bit of knowledge about the programs running on your computer. If something says it wants to connect to the internet but you have no idea what it is, that's going to be confusing.

I guess in that case one should block it, and then do research about it to find out if they should allow it or not.

1132017 2010-08-28 04:07:00 In terms of using it as a firewall, it stops everything from coming in from the outside world, unless something has asked for it.
Example:
You want a website, so your PC goes out through the router and NAT allows it back in.

Another example:
Somebody comes knocking, scanning to see if your PC is hosting websites, email server, things like that. NAT basically says "Sorry, nobody here, no computers behind me".

1132020 2010-08-28 08:03:00 is it possible people could attack you if you are using IE browser? while you are surfing.

i only visit well known sites, so i could live without a nat and fw and antivirus :D
been times when we just do a virus scan on christmas day.
