853052 2010-01-28 21:31:00 The object of army is to protect NZ,not to kill all in sight.

And how does an army "protect"? By asking them nicely to go home?

And seeing as NZ isn't invaded often, there is obviously no need for one.

It's a suckers game. Disputes between rulers would end by a duel if everyone refused to be slaughtered.

Humans are a breed of warmongers, The side that refused to fight would be slaughtered, then the women folk would be raped and slaughtered, then the kids would be enslaved, raped and slaughtered.

853054 2010-01-28 22:00:00 Why?

Have you been watching that doco on the Legion on Sky with Bear Grylls?

No, I work the night that is on . Have known about the FFL for a long time . Personal reasons .

Why would the French Foreign Legion take on an asthmatic?
Do you smoke?

They wouldn't know . They're not going to call my doctor back in NZ and I know I can manage without any inhalers . I don't smoke .

Sorry to hear that your application was unsuccessful . :(

So how did you find out? During a medical the army required prior to joining?

Does the army have a list of conditions that will exclude you from acceptance?

That's what ****s me off most . They don't say you can't join if you have asthma . Otherwise it would've saved me spending hours filling out the application . I sent in my application, got a letter saying they were doing the medical/security checks and just yesterday got told no . Found out I had asthma last year by going to my doctor and getting some tests done at the hospital . I am really fit, but I noticed when I was doing my muay thai class my breathing was letting me down compared to others .

Get your heart checked out Wolf . I had asthma for years (mainly brought on by exercise) - when I had a heart bypass, my asthma cleared up and I haven't touched an inhaler since . Apparently asthma can present and appear to be asthsma but it can mask symptoms of heart disease .

Heart disease isn't curable, but it is treatable, although the Army would probably not look kindly on heart disease either, but at least you wouldn't be dropping dead unexpectedly . . . .

Might look into that . But everyone in my family has asthma (all very mild and only my dad uses an inhaler) and I just thought I was the lucky one . Guess not .

853055 2010-01-28 22:18:00 I reckon the NZ military is a token force to show our powerful masters who we side with. Just in case the **** gets really bad.

And if it gets really bad I'm sure we can raise a large force to travel to some place we have no business being so they can die in large numbers.

In comparison our Air-force isn't even of token status.

NZ does a good job, our death numbers from modern operations are nothing compared to the road tolls.

The army is good for those who want to see the world, get fit etc it does do that, but you got to be willing to put the effort in. Kick ass not kiss it.

Probably where your aussie fella failed

For NZ its an excellent answer to the job shortage. More teens should join so they get to appreciate things better and get them out of their rooms

853058 2010-01-28 22:25:00 A guy I worked with in Aussie had done a runner from the Navy when his boat was commissioned for active duty in the Middle East during one of the Iraq invasions, he was horrified that they would send him into a war zone, Guess he was sucked in by the propaganda, Learn a trade, see the world, sunny skies and big smiles.

Oh yeah, and your a long way from home and people are getting killed, and if they get a chance will kill you.

Excellent.

And even worse, upon entering the work force discovered all his trade qualifications were worthless and he ended up swinging a sledge hammer in a demolition crew.

I don't understand all this whining from people. Do you get paid for free?

If you join the army, you have to be prepared to kill, be killed or be crippled. If you don't want that, don't join the army.
I hope the guy was court marshaled for desertion.

Bloody pansy.

If you don't strike first, you are first struck.
War has been the primo human business since the hunter gatherer days. Just because we haven't seen action in few years (not true for the SAS but still) doesn't mean you couldn't be called up tomorrow.

NZ Army wouldn't take me because I had asthma, even though I could ace their physical tests.

FFL won't know. TBH I ****ed up by telling the Army I had asthma, everyone lies to get in. I won't make the same mistake if I get to the FFL.

And have been talking to someone who used to be in the NZArmy, they reckon I should go back to my doctor and try and pass my asthma off as having a chest infection or something at the time and that I don't actually have it.

She also said half of the people on Basic are smokers, lazy, unmotivated, can't handle it etc.

I'm not like that. Why should they get in and not me.

I'm not giving up.

853060 2010-01-28 22:47:00 Is it possible to go to another recruiting station and take the physical there? bob_doe_nz (92)
853061 2010-01-28 22:53:00 Physical doesn't mean anything. I can pass it easy, they know that. But they won't take anyone with any asthma, period. --Wolf-- (128)
