852981 2010-01-29 19:16:00 I don't really know how BD is taking off, but The Warehouse use to have them prominently displayed, but now have them half pie hidden round the back. Video Ezy in Napier have about 100 BD disks for hire. Got out the Star trek movie and Harry Potter and The Prince Of Darkness which I watched last night. Wasn't nearly as good as District 9.

The Plasma is stunning and so is the home theater, It would take extreme analness on anyone's part to experience either and pick faults in it.

852985 2010-01-30 01:46:00 Blu-Ray is a piece of DRM-infested crap

The AACS 'Digital Rights Management' system in most HD-DVD and all Blu-Ray discs attempts to stop consumers from exercising fair use rights, including:

Playing purchased Blu-Ray and HD DVD films using Open Source software .
Playing films using standard digital (DVI) or analog (VGA) cables and monitors, which generally do not support HDCP DRM, without a 75% reduction in resolution .
Fast forwarding or skipping advertisements .
Playing imported films, including when local equivalents may be overpriced or not available .
Blu-Ray or HD DVD player applications require their unique player (or 'device') key to play discs . These keys are issued by AACS-LA to approved manufacturers that implement the restrictions above . This player key can decrypt each film's volume key, which in turn can decrypt the film's content to play it .

The best part? It's still entirely possible to pirate these and circumvent all these restrictions . Net result as per usual:

Legit purchasers who paid big bucks get screwed over, while the pirates are somewhere else enjoying HD movies for free and without the hassle of having to buy HDCP compliant TVs etc . All the while laughing at you, the MAFIAA, and everyone else who thinks DRM is a great idea . :D

852986 2010-01-30 05:00:00 I think most on here will not have a need for a BR,whilst we we have DVD's,in my case two.
Difference just doesn't justify throwing out good kit.

852987 2010-01-30 08:02:00 While I admit that Blu Ray is stunningly good when paired with the right display I really do believe that DVD is pretty damn good in it's own right and has such a stranglehold on the market that I've long wondered if Blu Ray will really ever take off.

Switching form VHS to DVD was one thing (ease of use and marked increase in picture/sound quality) but going again from DVD to Blu Ray just doesn't feel as compelling especially given the pretty high quality you can get from DVD. Let alone the cost of a Blu Ray disc!

I think that Blu Ray is just an interim '1/2 step' and the real new frontier (to usurp DVD) is direct downloading of SD & HD movies via the Internet thur Netflix, Xbox Live, iTunes etc.

+1 Plasma is definitely still a better than LCD including LED. Those that go on about power consumption need to realise Plasma yearly power consumption will cost something like $60 or less over LCD which is a tiny price to pay for the difference. Plasma for the Living room to get best viewing angle, natural colours and response times. LCD for the bedroom where picture quality is usually a little less important imo. As for those thinking CRT is still best need to catch up lol.
