1132800 2010-08-30 05:25:00 and DD-WRT ought to help a bit too. :)

What are you using DD-WRT for, and on what hardware?

1132801 2010-08-30 05:36:00 This is why I need something that can run one of the WRT distros for speed management etc.

Yet to find anything suitable that doesn't include WiFi (I'd prefer to use a separate AP I already have)

1132802 2010-08-30 08:28:00 Use something like Gargoyle / Tomato, and just disable WiFi? Chilling_Silence (9)
1132803 2010-08-30 09:27:00 I could, but it seems a waste of money to get one with WiFi and not use it... Agent_24 (57)
1132804 2010-08-30 09:43:00 On this speed test:

the best I can get using my VodoStick is 940kbps, about the same as Mongolia lol.

1132805 2010-08-30 20:56:00 Considering the price, < $100, I wouldn't be too concerned.

Basically it was created *for* WAP's, that's why there's basically no support for anything that has ADSL in it ;)

These speed Tests sites make me laugh, it gives one the impression you have a DIRECT single hop to the test server. In reality you may go through 12 hops to get there. If ANY of the hops are slow in any country your result will be way down even if you have a god like SUPER UBER mega Fiber connection in Sweden for example.

The results are utterly worthless when comparing countries, it cant even be used as a rough indicator.

Looks pretty and people lap it up however :P

Not yet...but at some stage hopefully on a d-link something or other, it's compatible, and just for general traffic management/logging. I prefer tomato but I don't have a router handy it will install on.

True, but going from Auckland to Auckland should still give you a relatively fair indication. If your exchange is overloaded, then you're going to be getting crap results, which are a fair indication of your crap connection.
If things are good, you're on ADSL2+, and nobody else at your home is downloading, then you should again get a pretty decent / accurate indication.

Internationally though you're right

Definitely worth grabbing a WRT54GL to try it on. They don't cost much but they're freakin great! Tomato has slicker graphing than Gargoyle, but Gargoyle takes the cake on the per-MAC address bandwidth limits.

D-Link devices aren't the greatest of the bunch, but provided you've got one of the DIR-series, then this may help:
www.dd-wrt.com

Keep in mind Tomato / Gargoyle wants 4MB Flash for the ROM to be stored on :)

1132809 2010-08-31 00:16:00 Hmm, I just checked my D-Link, which is one of these (www.dlink.com), turns out DD-WRT doesn't work on it. bugger. Might have to get a WRT54GL after all... kind of defeats the purpose of getting the wireless N Netcomm a bit now! :p

Anyhow, it will die a week out of warranty, with bad caps, and I'll have to replace it. :badpc:

Actually Chill, while we're on the subject, do you know of a reliable wireless N router that tomato will run on?
