| 853032 | 2010-01-28 09:56:00 | for enlistment into the New Zealand Army given your asthma. It is Defence Policy that all applicants must be completely asthma symptom and medication free for a minimum of four years prior to entry. If you do not meet this criteria with regards to asthma, you are unfit for Enlistment. This medical standard applies to anyone enlisting in the Army, regardless of what role they fulfil in the organisation. Even asthma, which is apparently mild and well controlled, may flare up unexpectedly. Should this happen in remote areas where no medical help is available, the consequences could be very serious for both yourself, and others. In addition, military training and exercises often subject individuals to inhalation of smoke and noxious fumes, which are common triggers of asthma attacks. The Army will not expose its personnel to unnecessary risk and for this reason regards asthma as being incompatible with military service. May I take this opportunity to thank you for your application, and wish you all the best for the future. --- As some of you may remember I wanted to join the NZ Army. Have been planning this since this time last year. Anyway, found out December 2009 I had very mild exercise induced asthma and was put on an inhaler. Applied the other week for the Army as a Driver and just received the above email. Am completely gutted. Had planned everything around that. Knew once I found out I had asthma my chances weren't going to be good, but I know people in the NZ Army who do have asthma, but they found out / admit they have it once they have had 50k spent on their basic training and the army won't get rid of them. Which is complete BS. I don't need the inhalers and did an EFL last year with a run time of 10:32 (2.4km), had to do it in under 12 mins. Am now saving for a trip to France to try for the Foreign Legion. |

Have you received all the important advice regarding the use of a preventer, since it is a condition that has recently been known to you? For instance, brush your teeth / wash your mouth when you have applied the orange puffer, use a spacer if need to, correct breathing techniques, how to recognise an asthma exacerbation etc.? Apologies for twisting the objective of this thread. |
