1453525 2018-09-11 18:11:00 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Do You Wish To Restart Cinnamon?

Wha? What happened?

The only thing I did to it last night was to finally - after all these years - install Facebook .

Was that a bad thing to do?

It seems to be running OK now - but time will tell . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Nope, facebook is a Service, a product. Some would say its a privacy stealing, data slurping abomination . :)

You can access FB from a web browser (or an app, I wouldnt if on a PC) . I wouldnt install a FB app unless you absolutely needed it. Its tentacles will want to slither all through what ever you install that app on.
Look at the access permissions it requires if you install it on your phone.
Just access FB from a browser instead.

Are you wanting FB , or FB messenger ?

Are you wanting FB , or FB messenger ?I guess I AM running it from a browser - since I had to create a bookmark on the toolbar for it here in Cinnamon.

Good thing you told me about it being so dangerous on a tablet/phone. I won't do that.

Confused about the distinction between the FB Messenger or Plain Ol' Vanilla FB though. Enlighten please.

1453530 2018-09-12 02:00:00 Messenger is a messaging app and you don't need that either. I never use the facebook app on my phone, it's a battery hog and wants to notify you anytime anything happens on facebook which gets really annoying and resists attempts to stop it. The website has a mobile version that works just fine, and when it tells you you need to install the messenger app to read your messages it's lying to you. You can just request the desktop version of the page from the android browser settings and read your messages in the browser just fine.

Sorry to go off on a bit of a tangent, I can't help with cinnamon and fallback mode but the facebook app on android really annoys me and is pointless.

1453531 2018-09-12 02:11:00 The only reason I decided to access FB on my home 'outer is that I have a lot of my old high school friends passing away now - I'm 72 and I know that we aren't gonna be around forever --- so I thought I'd check in on a few of them.

I've already found a few of the guys I hung with (or SHOULDDA hung with!) and a few ex-girlfriends who survived so far.

I'll take you at your word and NOT install the app on my tablet (with WiFi access).

Question to anyone savvy about Linux + FB ------

If I run FB on, say ---> Puppy, in a multi-boot 'puter with other flavors of L-based distros - can any FB malware hop from one distro to another?

:annoyed:

facebook malware?
Malware is operating system specific .

The only thing you could possibly get on any Linux is a browser hijacker . . . and even then it's pretty hard .

You are going to facebook, as you would any other website - news sites, ebay, pressf1 etc .
You login and view stuff .

It's not a program, just accessing a site .

Adblock your browser and use common sense, not clicking on any dodgy ads or rubbish and you're all good .

1453533 2018-09-13 06:09:00 Fallback mode is normally caused by having the incorrect graphics driver. If you use proprietary drivers, they need to be rebuilt with whatever kernel you are using.

Normally if your kernel has recently been updated, you would probably still be waiting for the drivers to be updated.

You should never really need to update your kernel if things are running fine. Maybe if it's a security update you should. Newer kernels are usually created to incorporate newer hardware, so there's little to be gained for old hardware, unless they finally added a driver you normally build.

If you can do in terminal:

inxi -Fxxxzrc0

This will show information about your hardware, we only needed to see graphics, but the full output is better.

In the graphics section for drivers, you may see fbdev, vesa or modesetting first which are fallback drivers, you may see the one you need to get working inside the brackets.

So your aim would be to get the driver you need working or boot into a previous kernel until those drivers are fixed for the newer kernel.

1453534 2018-09-13 11:10:00 There have been several false Facebook apps, all of them malware. They appear on the google store from time to time, but are soon taken off. mzee (3324)
