1453341 2018-09-05 03:14:00 If I was to drag myself kicking and screaming into the 21st century, what type of smartphone should I get, Android or Apple? Bryan (147)
1453342 2018-09-05 03:19:00 It really depends how much you're willing to spend, and what you want it to do.

In general, I prefer Android, but iPhones definitely have some advantages. They're both good options.

1453343 2018-09-05 03:21:00 It's a personal choice but for me droid all the way. I don't like the Idea of being locked into apples way of doing things, great phones though.
Also depends on budget, android scales all the way down to very cheap and all the way up to ridiculously expensive. Apple tend to stick to the higher end of that equation.

My last two phones have been second hand, I wait for a new flagship phone to release and then look for the previous model on trademe. It gets me a high end phone for a more reasonable price and I've been happy with the result.
Currently have a galaxy S8 I bought in great condition for $650 after selling my note 5 for $300.

1453344 2018-09-05 04:03:00 get a phone with a 5.5" screen minimum. A big screen makes it more usuable.

Also, get a brand with a history of releasing current patches and updates .
Many mid range ANDROID phones are pretty much abandoned after release and may not get any Android security patches no matter how critical .
Even some high end phones get abandoned by the manufacturer after 3 years (eg my phone)
Of all the Android devices Ive owned, only one ever got an update (and then only once)

I mean, really? So everyone with a smaller Android or an iPhone that's not a plus or an x is just wrong? Get real! :groan::groan:

It's a tradeoff between a bigger screen and a bigger phone - it depends on your hand size, how you usually carry your phone, etc. There's no one 'right' screen size, and bigger is not always better - it's about what suits the buyer.

1453346 2018-09-05 05:06:00 BH is going to get the phone app for her 8" tablet, now how bl**dy big is that, I can hardly cope with it "one hand", oh well, her g/f gets better results than moi, rofl.

They reckon the map app is fantastic to get around town tooo.

ps. can't dial emergency on tab tho.

1453347 2018-09-05 06:40:00 Bigger screen size is better for older people who do a lot of texting particularly if their sight is not 100%. There is no way my wife could handle one handed texting like our grandchildren can. Also easier to use the on screen keyboard on a larger screen. As already pointed out it is very much a horses for courses situation. I would suggest the OP decide how much he wishes to spend and what features he wishes to have then have a look in one of the telcos showrooms and see what he likes the look of. Android or Apple both work just fine. I stick with Android because that is what I am used to and cannot see any reason to change. CliveM (6007)
1453348 2018-09-05 07:31:00 Have a look in the mirror if you have a smug look on your face buy an iPhone.

Seriously the bigger screen is fantastic, my 5.5" Vodafone smart ultra 7 with big screen means I don't have to keep looking for my reading glasses

1453349 2018-09-06 02:25:00 You will generally be paying more for Apple phones and not necessarily getting more.
You would be wise to get 4G or put up with real slow performance in some places
Regarding size if you want a small screen you will be severely limiting your choice
Three years use of a mobile is a lifetime, get real
Get 32GB storage or you might run out of room for photos and be prevented from loading all the apps you want.
Get more pixels so you can read the screen in bright sun
You might want to look for fast charging and life of charge
Get one with newish OS
I recently got a moto g5s plus from dicksmith, around $300 now, although everyone seems to buy Samsung no matter how crappy the model. Perhaps use this moto as a benchmark.
You can use Pricespy to compare features.

.

for you perhaps. My androids are more than 3 years old & all still work .

$600-$1000 smartphone, trash after 3 years ? Only because people accept total lack of support .
Many people have phones more than 3 years old.
How many would pay descent money for a phone if they were told expect a 3year life max.
