1455307 2018-11-07 20:09:00 I agree there's a high level of nonsense to the plastic bag ban, but on the other hand, have you ever seen a reusable shopping bag blowing around the environment? Have you ever heard of aquatic life ingesting a reusable shopping bag? Are reusable bags getting washed into the waterways? Is a child in any danger of choking or suffocating if they play with a reusable shopping bag?

OK, given even shopping trolleys are a regular find in the rivers there will also inevitably be reusable bags making there way there as well, but they're getting there through deliberate acts of disposal, not through accidentally being whipped away in the wind.

Cotton just seems wrong.

Ever seen the damage to the environment caused by the manufacture of those reusable bags
They are hardly as clean & green as some claim.
ever seen the thousands of people using 'single use ' bags multiple times
ever seen ACTUAL sea life eating an ACTUAL single use bag.... no you havnt.

ever seen how easy it is to cheery pick facts

1455310 2018-11-28 08:50:00 I'd like to see some sanity in the plastic shopping bags ban. Its more a ~feel good~ than a ~do good~ thing

Reusable are far from the clean green option

A new study shows reusable cotton bags need to be used 173 times before they're better than single-use plastic bags for the environment.
Victoria University's environmental science lecturer Dr Lynda Petherick told Mike Hosking reusable bags are harsh on the environment to produce.
"I think sometimes people might just have a bit of a knee-jerk reaction, you see something that looks better on paper but isn't necessarily better when you look at the entire lifespan."

Cutting back on plastic bags can only be a good thing, but why ban the 2-3 bags I put my groceries in when 1/2 my groceries come wrapped in some sort of plastic .
Ban plastic shopping bags, but keep selling thousands of products that come in plastic bags that CANT be used again .

There will always be two sides of the argument. And there's nothing perfectly environmentally friendly. Let's think of it: any material is somehow affecting the environment (either directly or in a perspective). And there's no way to create an ideal substance that will be a utopian environmentally friendly tool.

1455311 2018-11-28 09:27:00 From now on I will go to supermarket armed with greased proof paper roll and /or some of the free paper bags that they supply for Mushrooms and bakery items. When I take the plastic wrapped items out to my car , I shall then take off all the plastic wrapping and re wrap the items in the paper alternative! I shall leave the plastic crap stuff in the trolley for the supermarket to get rid of.... maybe they will get the message to use an alternative to plastic. I do remember when there was no plastic and things were always wrapped in paper or placed in a paper bag.

Sounds like you have plenty of time.
I wonder how long you will keep that up for?

It's a step. Albeit one that looks good and doesn't accomplish a lot.

Humans need to stop making everything out of plastic, is the issue. Everything is either plastic or contains some.

Yep, a narrow strip of brown paper was all the wrapping you got on a loaf of bread, and only in some shops, many gave you naturist loaves. Sliced bread put a bit of a change in the system.
Mince in paper bags lacks appeal. The all pervading stench of seafood in newspaper whipped through a tram in double quick time, not totally joyous for those of us allergic to the stuff.
I must say paper darts are seriously superior to GladWrap darts.
