| 1133561 | 2010-08-31 22:52:00 | Hi everyone, as the title suggests when I turn my PC on it takes a lot longer than it used to, for the icons to appear. I have typed in msconfig, there are 11 programs that startup, not sure if i can reduce anymore becuase not to sure if i need them on startup. I have ran Adaware and there was about 10 tracking cookies so i deleted all of them. Also have ran AVG which found tracking cookies as well, but still it takes a lot longer for the icons to appear, sometimes the PC runs slower than normal and have trouble closing some programs, so any help would be appreciated. Also I had 2 options on startup , win XP home or win XP pro but the option of using XP Pro has disaapeared now and it just starts up and runs XP home edition. thanks in advance for any help. |

| 1133563 | 2010-08-31 23:13:00 | Ah! I know a possible answer to part of this one if the icons just take a while to pop up and do so sequentially over time (XP version originally provided by sweep) Up to and including Windows 2000, you delete the icon cache. This is a hidden file called ShellIconCache and you will find it in the %WINDIR% folder. (Originally provided by sweep) For XP (and presumably later versions of Windows it is called IconCache.db, this file is also hidden and you will find it in the %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data. Delete it and reboot. The first boot they will still be slow while the file is rebuilt, but after that it will be fast again. Needs doing once in a while to keep the speed up. You will have to tell Windows to show hidden files of course. Speedy's HJT will deal with other slowdown issues. Cheers Billy 8-{) |

| 1133566 | 2010-08-31 23:23:00 | One thing to check on - make sure you dont have any large files, or folders containing large files on the desktop. Seen this once, Icons took ages to load even after cleaning out the icon cache. The problem was the desktop had large files in folders, over 10GB in total, removed them and icons/ desktop loaded in an instant. |

| 1133567 | 2010-08-31 23:23:00 | You could also research the start up processes online, to evaluate if they are necessary. I know there is a massive online database for 100's of start up/background processes. Be careful though, you don't want to disable/remove required and critical processes. Perhaps also do a boot scan with your AV program... |
