1132886 2010-08-29 21:43:00 Hi Team

A few months back I posted This Thread (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) but before I got a simple and effective resolution, the nag screen went away.

It came back yesterday  and was there again this morning. I don't want to get into solutions that require registry editing, that is fraught with potention problems for the risk-averse, so are there any fresh ideas? Would renaming all exe files or directories associated with OE be of any help?

Incidentally, I noticed that the old thread was locked. Since when did PF1 start locking innocuous (and very recent) threads like that?

Cheers

1132887 2010-08-29 21:52:00 3 months of inactivity to lock a thread - A great idea too. There was a poll on it and everything. ;)

As for the OE issue....maybe it would be worth removing the original windows messenger from the same spot you were in before, was it add remove windows features? The other thing would be to double check that OE is not set as your default email application.

I'm pretty sure you can change the time it takes for the message compressing box to some up, or even turn it off altogether. I think it's in the maintenance tab. I don't have a PC with OE on it to check at the moment.

Click Options on the Outlook Express Tools menu.

2. Click the Maintenance tab.

3. Clear the checkbox for "Compact messages automatically in the background".

4. Click OK.

1132889 2010-08-30 01:17:00 This condition has been created due to a series of changes, the first was :

"In XPSP2, the registry key (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID}\Software\Micr osoft\Outlook Express\5 . 0 where GUID represents the Identity Number) has a new value ("Compact Check Count") that is incremented with each closing of OE . When OE is closed and this value reaches 100, then the user is prompted to compact all the folders . Only if the user agrees to compact such does the "Compact Check Count" get reset to zero . Otherwise the user is continuously prompted until they agree to compact . However, if this occurs during a machine shutdown, the shutdown can interrupt the compact process and result in message loss . "

Of course if you don't use Outlook Express, it doesent get Opened and Closed so the count is not incremented and no prompt is given .
But then in a real world there are other bad practices and two of them have been identified as Nero indexing service and Windows Desktop Search both of which in the course of their duties, Open and then Close some component of Outlook Express in order to index the file .

This results in the Registry value "Compact Check Count" being incremented till it reaches 100 at which time you will be prompted to compact OE folders . Agreeing to this will reset the count to zero, disagreeing will perpetuate the prompt .

Since you have no data in the folders of OE, I would recommend agreeing, just to shut it up .

1132890 2010-08-30 01:22:00 Further to my previous, I have seen two reported "cures" one was to reinstal Nero, and the other was to uninstal Windows Desktop Search.

1132891 2010-08-30 02:52:00 Well, I don't have Nero anything installed, and don't use Windows Desktop Search (didn't know it even existed) :xmouth:

Tools>Options>Maintenance doesn't pop up the "compact" option Speedy. Perhaps it isn't available until you have actually used the program? But boy, did it ever get insistent when it discovered somebody was tickling its bits! I had to stop it several time while OE was open.

I presume that renaming OE's exe would just start another argument by Windows? I guess that so long as there is zero risk of affecting my Outlook pst file there is no reason not to let it compact the non-existent mail files?

Should take all of a few microseconds to do, and I hope it is suitably embarrassed!

 [cough] Yeah, vague memories of the 'close thread' Poll, I probably voted for it too, on the basis that you can always bring up an old thread via a link if you really need to, as I did. :D

1132892 2010-08-30 03:02:00 Hmm not sure, it may only appear if you havent installed any service packs. The flatmate used to have the same prob with XP. But its been updated since Speedy Gonzales (78)
1132893 2010-08-30 13:07:00 Background compaction option was removed when Compact Check Count was introduced.
Manual compact is now in OE>File> Folder>Compact all folders.
Windows Search was a Windows Update and you don't have to use it for it to effect Compact check count, it is the indexing function that clocks up the count. Check for Windows Search 4.0 in Add and Remove Programs, if you don't use it, remove it, do a manual compact and you should never be bothered again.
