854850 2010-02-03 01:50:00 According to the article a guy was chasing the police at speeds up to 90km/h:

www.nzherald.co.nz

Now i gotta wonder why the police just didn't obey the 50km/h speed limit. Why did they speed up if they didn't know the guy was going to ram them?

Example:
Car starts tailgating you when your driving 50km/h

What to do?:
Change lanes and let the guy pass
Don't change lanes and obey speed limit
Pull over to the side of the road if possible

Even if they did know he was going to ram them, is it legal to break the speed limit in this case? Probably is, but if you crash and kill someone you would probably be charged with manslaughter right?

854851 2010-02-03 01:54:00 The police weren't obeying the speed limit as they were on their way to a call out, The ****wit in the van hit them when they stopped at an intersection.

And your questioning why the police why they weren't driving at 50k/h?, No doubt you would also complain if they drove to an emergency at the speed limit and people died while they were waiting for the police to arrive.

854852 2010-02-03 02:03:00 *** the police can drive as fast as the like given sufficient legal reason. We pay them to look after our safety. Let them do their job without petty bickering obout how they do it. If they get it wrong the system sure sorts them out. In this particular case according to all the reported detail so far the police were doing everything correctly. The stupid mad man in the jeep was the sole cause of the accident. Lets wait for a bit before making unwarranted accusations. CliveM (6007)

After about 2km the police car, followed by Klein, came to a red light where police said Klein deliberately rammed it from behind at speed.

The ramming pushed the patrol car into the path of incoming traffic causing more collisions.

They're cops, why the hell would THEY pull over?

854854 2010-02-03 02:16:00 Useless post Lance4k.

Police have named the elderly driver who was instantly killed when a man allegedly rammed a police car, rolled his jeep, and landed on top of another car.

Michael Roden Plimmer, 71, of Albany was killed instantly. Police allege Cornelis Klein, 50, caused the crash after becoming suicidal and "shouting and screaming".

Klein later told police he had rammed the police car on purpose because he thought they were going too fast when they passed him, according to police documents.

He is alleged to have been driving with his ex-partner's 18-year-old daughter yesterday when he began talking about taking his own life, the police summary of facts said.

"He described his own actions, admitting accelerating into the rear of the police vehicle, stating he wanted to punish them for passing him" the document said.

854855 2010-02-03 02:35:00 The police were responding to a call about Klein. Did they realise that they had already passed him when they continued on? Were they heading to a specific address and didn't connect the Jeep behind them with him? PaulD (232)
854856 2010-02-03 02:55:00 Nowhere in the article does it say the Police were speeding.

The moron who rammed the police car was the one who was speeding - "Police said Klein then chased police at speeds of up to 90km/h."

There is a difference.

How would the Police know what speeds he reached unless he was keeping up with them?
