853720 2010-02-01 01:28:00 Coming from a dead town with little to no job prospects (like the vast majority of towns and cities in NZ) when you have exhaused local oputunties you need to look futher afeild, and faced with Auckland or Aussie most will go straight to Aussie as Auckland is such a miserable shithole.Auckland is a great city. The only problems... banana eating neanderthals who visit from the colonies, the road congestion, and the size of the place. Greg (193)
853721 2010-02-01 01:32:00 I just spent a week in Napier, Now that's a great city.

Plenty to see and do, easy to get around, good climate, Industry everywhere you look.

853722 2010-02-01 05:29:00 In Wellington anyway there haven't been many jobs advertised for six months or so but it is starting to pick up now both for full time and contractors. Twelvevolts (5457)

853724 2010-02-01 22:52:00 I feel so depressed and sad and worthless just being in the house all day.

I have never had anyone knock on my door and offer me a fulltime job in IT yet.

853725 2010-02-01 22:54:00 I feel so depressed and sad and worthless just being in the house all day.

I hear alcohol can cure that.

And of course there is Internet porn, and World of Warcraft.

853727 2010-02-01 23:35:00 OP, you had interviews? Have you applied to non IT roles? What sort of roles?

I know someone who was a international student and now got a PR to stay and work in NZ. He is quite a introvert, NZ can be quite different to some other countries. Where he comes from, more people are introvert, they over study, he has a Masters degree and studying a PhD and is working for a job that pays $35k before tax - admittedly the boss is a migrant too.

He is also not willing to be flexible. He has this thing, I have a Masters and it is in management therefore I want a management job or a management trainee. Employers can tell straight away if you blend into the group or not.

I think in most case it is not having the best employee but a person who can learn on the job and get on with others ......

The company I work for has been looking for developers for all of 2009 and they are still looking.

They -do- look at your university grades though, and I think they -do- require you have a degree. If only to demonstrate skill but more importantly that you are -able- to learn.

I've never been asked for my results.
But in this age I think so many students have a degree, some employers may want a degree even if it is not related, it is a advantage at least. It shows you have done a 3 yr study and from that a lot of life skills. Ie., time mgmt, networking, presentation etc. Not just answering multiple choice questions or short statement questions but into longer writings.... I read that overseas and maybe in NZ if you want to be a airline pilot, employers may want that you have a university degree as well.

853728 2010-02-01 23:38:00 I had 4 interviews and 1 of them was successful. But the company went bank rupt after I came in. I gained 4 months of experience there. forums12345 (15197)
