Specifically I looked at jobs I would get here. Not jobs in other industries or jobs above my experience level.

I compared apples with apples, not apples with oranges, so to speak.

Health and Safety in Civil Construction.

Currently I can see zero such jobs in NZ, compared to Dozens in just QLD alone.

They -do- look at your university grades though, and I think they -do- require you have a degree. If only to demonstrate skill but more importantly that you are -able- to learn.

I think re: people going overseas - not just limited to AU. There may be more jobs, but job conditions may not be as good as NZ and rising living cost. But I think the attraction has been the thrill of the OE - that you are not in NZ.

Coming from a dead town with little to no job prospects (like the vast majority of towns and cities in NZ) when you have exhaused local oputunties you need to look futher afeild, and faced with Auckland or Aussie most will go straight to Aussie as Auckland is such a miserable shithole.

853713 2010-01-31 22:56:00 Yup, not just Aussie thou. There are Europe and not just the UK, there is Eastern Europe and, Asia. Hence I say, many places maybe the thrill of the OE than financial incentives.

A lot of people like teaching English in Asia for example and the lifestyle they can travel around the vicinity, NZ is a bit remote to the rest of the world ...

853714 2010-01-31 22:57:00 Auckland not all bad, just North Shore, East and South Auckland.
I agree though Aussie is the place if you can put up with Australians, snakes and flies.

Aussie is the place if you can put up with summer all year round, plenty of job prospects, good wages, babes in bikinis, excellent medical cover, great housing, well planned cities and plenty of kiwis.

If I could I would love to go back.

853716 2010-01-31 23:14:00 I know a friend since uni, from Fiji, a smart student, studied 7 days and long hours, didn't even attend graduation, got into work with KPMG with Fiji then migrated to Melb and now in Brisbane, chose over NZ due to the weather.

Coming from Welly, been to Auckland, we liked it, a larger place, more diverse demographics, more people, better ethnic food, I found it similar to Sydney.
Less wind (!), warmer and more humid. Dad said fresh air was better in Welly as it was cooler and less muggy and humid :p

I agree thou for many why bother with Auckland when you can go to Aussie.

I cannot stand the hot, Brisbane airport was too hot for me, likewise SE Asia, I don't enjoy being sweaty and going back to the hotel mid day to cool off and have the toilet seat stick to yourself. I am a autumn person, I like my dark color sweaters and a light jacket :p

Sydney can get a bit hot too and that was late April, was a long weekend with a public holiday perhaps

I find NZ is maybe more mellow. Go to Auckland if you are not in Welly or Chacha apply, if not successful, do non IT work for a yr or two and keep a active eye for IT roles and apply to them. Or go abroad.

853717 2010-01-31 23:27:00 I have a friend who was in the same position. He went to Oz, and found a job straightaway, and is earning more than he could in NZ. Sorry to say it, but moving to Oz can sometimes be the solution, as their economy is in a far better state then NZs.

I couldnt get an IT job in oz.....but got a good one here....go figure!

The fact you can't wash your car, the fact you have to take 30 second showers, fact their cities have silly names like Wollongong (sounds like a dildo manufacturer), the Lebanese gangsters, the Iraqi gangsters etc, the aussie mozzie, Mark Webber fans and just your average run of the mill Aussies (******s); hell I could probably put up with all those, what I couldn't put up with would be their nasty accents. It'd drive me insane.
