854435 2010-02-02 22:47:00 As for promoting Norton products... their 2009 range and onwards are very, very good.

They just don't detect anything.

To be fair,he didn't say good for what!

The realtime scanning isn't as thorough as it should be, agreed, but the on-demand scanning as far as I've experienced detects just as much as any other AV product out there.

854438 2010-02-02 23:14:00 I find Norton is good for bringing in work :p

Again today, collected two laptops from the same family, both have / Had Norton Internet Security 2009 - appears to have corrupted the systems - wouldn't start even in safe mode, 1 so far anyway - disabled it Via a third party Bootable CD - and started instantly in safe mode, enough to take it out correctly - I suspect the other may do the same.

I can let you know shortly, when I get a moment - I have a drive, riddled with infections, cloned it from the original, then ran the clone as a slave using Nod32 to scan - nod found Over 3000 (www.imagef1.net.nz) - infections - I'm going to reclone it and try with Norton.

Will be an interesting result. As to them using NIS, can't say I really like any of the Norton products aside from the pure AV... the rest still seem just as crap as they have for years! lol

854440 2010-02-03 02:02:00 Hey Wainui......funny how we both keep finding Nortons is a piece of **** and these others say it's marvellous. Makes you wonder if they read the blurb and believe it whereas we see real world results huh. pctek (84)

Uh huh. Absolutely. I suspect it's more that, becuase their product was terrible for such a long time, you've simply decided it always will be. Is it the best? No, far from it. But it's certainly pushed itself back towards the upper echelons of that type of product, and it's even reasonably priced now.

The major issues of sluggish performance and impacting system stability/integrity have been well-address (in the AV-only products), and imo the ondemand scanner is as good as *most* competing products. As above, though, their realtime scanning has some improvements to do.

Would I actively recommend people go out and buy it as a first choice AV product? No, I still wouldn't, because it's *not* my first choice. But I'd no longer immediately decide that it needed to be replaced with something else.

As with all AV products, it still needs to be combined with a user who at least has *some* clue about how they're using the PC, in order to be effective. Give me a PC with whatever AV you like, and you can bet I can find a user who can manage to get it infected.

Sigh.

Of course you can. But then a number of people drive a vehicle of some sort and have no idea of the mechanics under the hood.

You can find people who will stuff up anything regardless of any built in safeguards.

A computer will do what it is told.

Anyways -- to stop hijacking this thread-- have a look back at Epic Fail (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) - Norton Results - or total confusion Norton Experience (www.imagef1.net.nz) ;)
